University of Pittsburgh Bradford: Thoughts? Kind of Saddend....

I'm an in-stater, and I applied to the main campus of Pitt in early November of 2011. With my current stats and grades, I knew I wouldn't be able to get into the main campus. So I visited Johnstown, thought it was bearable enough to survive in, and had all the intentions of going to Johnstown. My plan was to spend a couple years or so there and then transfer to the main campus. But when I got the letter back, (beginning of January 2012) it said that I did not get accepted to Johnstown but to Bradford, which is literally nowhere at all. More so than Johnstown. In my application, I put my major as nursing, so I wonder if that dissuaded my admissions a bit of where I was to go, because the nursing program is a bit harder to get in, and I don't think my SAT scores quite made the cut. If I changed my major, would things have been different? (Doing nursing was a loose plan at that time...but I'm starting to brighten up to the idea of it) I also think that another problem is my timing, because I applied in November and Pitt is a rolling admissions school. I admit, I had everything in, but I deterred due to procrastination, so it's my fault.

I'm really worried because it's already January and I haven't applied to many schools. though I'm still in the whole college process thing. I'm waiting to hear back from Duquesne and Ohio State, and I already got accepted into Ohio University as an undecided Health Science major. You could say that Duqeusne and Pitt were my main ones to get into because: 1.) Tuition is lower (Believe me, I would LOVE to go out state, but you know the economy....) 2.) Pitt is generally known; always has superb good programs; is climbing the ranks etc. etc. etc. 3.) I know some relatives that went to Duquesne.
For Duquesne, I applied to their nursing school and if I don't get in, I really don't know what to do. If I do, then it's a matter between Duquesne and Bradford.

Speaking of Bradford, since this is what this whole thread is about, what do you think or know about it? How are the academics? Are the professors and programs good? Are the science programs (like nursing) the same one as the main campus? Is there stuff to do? How is the SNOW?? (I was planning to visit the campus this weekend, and heard it got 4 inches of snow) What is Bradford known for? Are they known at all? How is transferring to the main campus? I know that it's pretty small, and I'm not sure if I'm a big fan of that because I come from a big high school and I'm kind of used to that. Basically, just your thoughts, opinions, advice; anything at all on the University of Pittsburgh - Bradford.

Thanks - this would help me out so much.
(I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forums. As you can see, I'm kind of new at posting here.)

Bradford and UPJ aren’t really that far apart academically, and Princeton Review actually has Bradford rated as the top Pitt regional, academically. Bradford is definitely more isolated though, and a little smaller. It does have the reputation for getting a lot of snow. A lot of people love it because of its setting, which is supposed be very pretty and adjacent to a large nature area. I have never been there to directly comment though.

From last years statistics, Pitt’s branches stack up as the following…

Here are the raw numbers for the regionals from the common data sets (most numbers for the regionals aren’t updated for this year yet):

SAT M+CR 25-75 percentile, Top 10% of H.S. class, average GPA
Pitt (main):1170-1380, 54%, 3.94
UPG: : 920-1110, 11%, 3.46
UPJ : 910-1110, 13%, 3.38
UPB : 870-1110, 11%, 3.24
UPT : 783 - 990, 6%, 3.01

Princeton Review’s academic rating score is only assigned to schools that have made its Best Schools rankings. Just for comparison, here is the equivalent sort of the public schools in Pennsylvania which landed academic rating scores.

Pitt-main 83
PSU-main 77
Temple 73
Pitt-Bradford 70
Slippery Rock 69
Pitt-Johnstown 68
California ¶ 67
Indiana (IUP) 67
Kutztown 66

No other public schools in PA were assigned an academic rating.

Selectivity falls out this way in Princeton Review’s scores:
Pitt-main 92
Pitt-Greensburg 74
Pitt-Bradford 71
Pitt-Johnstown 71

In US News, UPJ was ranked #21 and UPB was ranked #31 in their Regional College North Rankings last year. They may not be ranked this year, but that is because of a technicality in that they are accredited under Pitt-main, not independently, and therefore US News did not rank them separately.

I’d have to think that you’d be able to at least transfer into UPJ or Greensburg if you didn’t like Bradford, if not Pitt-main ultimately. But you’d have to discuss that with someone more familiar with the transferring process.

Thanks wgmcp101. That really helped out a bit. I’m still mulling over my options though. Anyone else want to comment? Please?
