I’ve been patiently waiting for someone to make an official thread for the the prospective class of 2023 since most of us are are finally done our junior year of high school, but nothing thus far so please post stats, visits, courses, or anything Pitt.
I’m applying to Pitt hopefully soon (i would love to do it as early as possible haha) and have filled everything out on the app except for the short answer questions. I’m applying to the main campus and the school of arts and sciences (which i think is the general one) for hopefully a major in public health/neuroscience. I’m OOS from VA and take mostly IB classes but am not an IB diploma candidate. I have decent Ecs, sports and music mainly and have a 4.3 weighted and 1500 sat (730 r/w, 770 math). I’m hopeful I can get in but preparing for anything honestly…I visited back in october and it was gorgeous aside from the fact that it was pouring the entire campus tour. Hopefully I can go back in nicer weather later on. One thing I am a little confused on is the earliest date for applications. Obviously i am not going to submit it in July and am not really close to finished with the app but would like to do it as soon as possible, I know the rollover date hasn’t come since it still asks me if i am fall 2018 or spring 2019, which i’m not either one of them. good luck to you guys in applications and I am sure the rolling admissions will (hopefully) provide us a huge favor haha
@rlenard… You have very nice credentials. Good Luck to you. The application opens up 8/1 (that is when it opened up when my son applied last year) Best of luck!
This is great! Im trying to find as many college chat threads for my prospective college choices and this is definitely one
@rlenard Make sure you put a lot of effort into the essays. Your credentials are great and I seriously doubt that you would not get an acceptance. You’ll likely get Honors Program and merit, but the essays will have an impact.
@rienard Man if you can find the strength and time to take the SAT one more time and get a few more points you will really strengthen your chances for merit aid! Best of luck, you sound like a solid admit.
Pitt in recent years has been a tough admission.
4 majors require a bit more than others. Nursing, Engineering, Pharmacy, …and cant recall the 4th, sorry. The average SAT for those 4 is 1460.
They have Gold and Blue days you could visit and get application fee waiver. They do not use the common app but do use the coalition, or you could apply on the main web site.
I live 10 mins away from grew up a strong Pitt person. Recently I realized I prefer rural campuses, so Pitt is only my safety school. H2P!!!
Good luck to all.
@rlenard , best of luck! My D will be moving in on 8/20, so we are very excited for her. She was in your shoes last year. She also had a 1500. My girl had no interest in taking the SAT again, and she did not. However, I firmly agree with @carachel2 - take it again. Bump up a bit on your math or your reading (they will super score, correct?) I encourage you to look at it as separate scores, then perhaps you’ll see the wiggle room. My girl had a 770 on math, and I think she was afraid of doing worse. But her reading was a 730. She could’ve gained maybe 20 points or more in the reading based on her practice tests. Who cares if she would’ve dropped 10 or 20 in math? Over all, it would’ve been a 1520+. And that would’ve gone a lot farther, not just at Pitt, but at the other crazy competitive schools she applied to as well. Higher scores = higher merit, and that’s a general rule for all schools.
Overall, she did well with Pitt’s offer, but at the time that she applied, she had a 5.0 weighted - she is also neuroscience, got $10,000 merit per year (was originally $5,000 per year but we submitted a successful cost comparison, and she got more!, and Honors College. She also got a spot in the GAP for Physician Assistant. So my point is - go for it!!! Don’t be afraid of pushing this application, of working it hard! Best of luck to you.
Thank you! I hope to be in the same boat as your daughter if i get admitted. I worked a ton on editing my essays and hopefully they are good, but i’ll just have to wait and see. I submitted my app on the 3rd so my fingers are crossed until i find out!
Just for an FYI everyone, I recently attended one of the blue and gold days and my tour guy said that the incoming class of 2022 has an average GPA of a 4.2 (W obviously). Not sure how accurate that is but just wanted to let everyone interested in Pitt know.
^^^ And average ACT of 30.
@rlenard Definitely take it again or try the ACT.
My son is moving in next week. His 34 ACT converted to a 1540 SAT and was worth $10k in merit which we argued up to $15k with comp schools. A 35 ACT would probably have gotten him more upfront. Every point is worth $. Take a look at the threads from the last two years. good luck
Sorry he did get a 35 ACT. Actually his HS schedule strength was probably the difference - his scores were there. What i think I meant was get good grades with a tough schedule then the extra SAT/ACT points do help
I am looking to enroll into the Swanson school of engineering, how would you say my chances are?
SAT:1270 (EBRW- 610, M 660)
GPA: 4.6 Weighted, 4.0 Unweighted
Rank: 1/150 with unweighted GPA and top 4% with weighted
I am taking the SAT one more time in August and I’m hoping for at least 1330 (maybe a 630 in EBRW and 700 in Math), if not more. I am in state but I’m originally from Asia. I have lots of extra-curriculars (NHS, student council, etc.) including many volunteer hours. Throughout my high school years, I will have a total of 10 AP classes. I know I am not going to get merit aid at all but what are my chances of getting into the engineering school at Pitt? It’s my number 1 choice!!
@Mayachhetri --get that SAT into the high 1300s and your chances should be good. Your math score is strong. Are you taking AP Calc BC, AP physics and AP chem? Also, have you tried the ACT?
The average ACT for this year’s entering class is 30. I would expect for Swanson the average is a bit higher.
@carachel2 Yes, I have already taken AP Physics, but Im taking AP Calc AB, AP Chem, AP Computer Science and a few others my senior year. I did worst on the ACT so it’s not for me! I am just hoping to get in from my SAT scores.
@Mayachhetri that looks like a solid senior year. I wish you well! Keep us posted.
My D submitted on Aug 1st, has anyone heard back yet? They told her 2-4 weeks but she is really nervous. Just wanted to see if anyone else has heard yet. Thanks and good luck to everyone!
Hello, @WaitingPitt - She should not expect a response until September.
Best of luck!

@hailtopitt1787 I submitted my application on the 20th, when should I expect to have a decision back? Also, I got an email with log in credentials for the portal, what will those be used for? Thanks!
