I read last year that Computer Science majors did not get merit. Not sure how true. we need merit for my son to attend. Pitt is top choice
@Topcat123 Thanks for all the great info!
@klbkab2 My daughter and the young man who got into MIT are both computer science majors. I did see a couple of CS majors who received merit, with lower stats than our kids. I don’t know if Pitt thinks the high stat kids won’t come there anyway so why bother but I know my daughter would have. Pitt was top choice for her as well but I have to say, she is thriving at the school she ultimately chose. She is not excited to come home for Thanksgiving…
Wow, 6-8 weeks? My son heard back in less than two weeks.
My son heard in 4 weeks- Swanson.
Do you mind sharing scores/stats?
And congrats, exciting time!
Great news. My son received $20k year in merit. (not trying to brag) - I am so Very relieved! more than we expected. We are out of state. Came by mail In letter today…
His stats are 4.78 weighted. 4.0 Un weighted. In Challenging Science and Math magnet Program at his school… Lots of AP. Did all the supplemental questions…1500 Sat. Accepted to engineering at Pitt
good luck everyone. Hopefully you all get merit letters soon
Congrats and you should brag a little since your son put so much work in for this award
H2P !!!
Congrats! Are you OOS (what state if so) or instate? When did you receive your acceptance to the school? When was the letter dated?
@klbkab2: congrats to you and your son. It’s always good to see hard work paying off.
@engDad63 My son had a similar composite SAT score as your daughter’s for Swanson. Slightly higher math score (750), but 710 is still great! I definitely would have submitted SAT scores in your shoes (and did!). Did you say you did send official scores? Just trying to figure out what could be holding your results up. Has she taken calculus plus all the usual high school lab sciences?
@klbkab2 Congrats! Hoping to hear back for my daughter re: merit soon as well… she is instate with similar GPA and 1570 SAT. School of Computing.
Out of state…Maryland
@engDad63 I also forgot to ask whether your daughter did the optional essays. Sorry if you mentioned that in a previous post. Son did two, including the one that was recommended for engineering applicants.
She did. I can’t remember if Pitt took letters of rec, but she had those too.
And calc, most all AP classes…
@engDad63 Hmm, I’m at a loss! Did she do the Pitt SRAR? I really think she is a great candidate. Son did not send LORs and filled out the SRAR. Please keep us posted and don’t lose faith! Also, definitely find out who her regional rep is and have her email that person to express her interest. I did reach out to son’s rep to answer a few questions. Good luck!
@engDad63 We are in the same boat here for my daughter - great STATS, high scores, tons of APs and great activities. Application has been complete for 2 months. Confirmed to be all set and complete by regional representative who said she’ll typically hear in 4-6 weeks (and that was after 6.5 weeks already and that was now 3 weeks ago). She applied the end of august - nothing! oh - and she is double legacy! I can’t help but feel it is some sort of glitch.

Yeah, double legacy here too (and applied at the beginning of August). Not sure what to do. Is your daughter also applying to Swanson?
