University of Pittsburgh Class of 2028 Official Discussion Thread

That is really helpful. Thanks!

They make it pretty clear on the website that they do not want LOR. When we visited they said that they don’t look at them unless you need a letter to “explain” something in your application (like a big blip in your grades, etc.). Instead they stressed the importance of the essay/personal statement. There wasn’t any guidance on a resume format so my daughter just put something together that she liked.

Things may have changed but this information was in their Common Data set and it indicates they will consider letters. As OP said maybe they only consider if you need to “explain” something.

Thank you for your responses on LOR.
Does including a LOR in the effort to have it ‘considered’ delay any application review process or decision notification?
Is it better to submit application through the University Portal or the Common App?
If I have more than 10 meaningful activities to report, where else can I possibly report them besides the Common App list which seems to ask only for 10?
Thank you so much!

For those already received acceptance, are you planning to apply Honor College? Is there additional steps/instruction provided after you get your acceptance?

This was in S24 acceptance letter regarding honors application
“Applicants who wish to be considered for admission to David C. Frederick Honors College must submit their completed application for admission and required essay no later than December 1. Students meeting the December 1 deadline will be notified of their David C. Frederick Honors College admissions decision, as a group, on or before March 1.”

So in this case, do the students mark ‘No’ for consideration to Honors when they apply through Common App? Because thought if you says ‘Yes’ it will automatically need the honors essay right then…

Everyone accepted so far has really great stats and I think historically they are accepted faster. But I don’t think it necessarily means that you won’t get in. It is still early.

I heard different school meets at different timing. You may be hearing back from them soon since all staffs should be back to school now.

Mark No on the app. Then you can apply to honors program directly from Pitt later with no problems.

I don’t believe that my LOR has been received yet - i emailed my counselor two days before acceptance and she was only getting ready to send it. They may have just made the decision based on scores and everything I included in my common app. Try grouping your activities into categories rather than listing them separately. I listed all leadership in one area, awards, work experience etc.

Yes, and based on what they said on the webinar submit your letter for honors sooner rather than later - don’t wait until close to the deadline to submit.

Have you checked your portal to make sure there are no “to-do items” and that your application is under review? I don’t know how they actually review them. It may be alphabetically, it could be random, your admission counselor may be slower than others in updating the system. There could be a host of reasons.

Since we applied via Common App, everything has to be included before submission. The Pitt account my son received does not work for Pitt Application though. It only works for Student Center and Document Center. If you picked No for Honor in Common App and submitted the application, where you can apply it later?

How long did portal access take? My D applied 8/26/23 and no email of confirmation yet or portal invitation etc.

I don’t think they work on the weekend. If they received your application on Monday 8/28, you should expect the email tomorrow or Friday base on our experience. My son submitted via Common App on 8/19 (Saturday). Application was only downloaded by school on 8/21 (Monday) and he got Tech email to activate his Pitt account on 8/24.

It can take a few days. Applied 8/1 and had access the next day. But that was the first day of accepting applications. As the weeks roll by they are receiving more and more applications so it takes a little longer. If you have not heard by the end of the week maybe send an email. Applied to another school 8/1 and have received nothing. Emailed them yesterday and they told us it will take time. I think you can check in the Common App if the application has been downloaded by the school.
