University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Pre-med/Bio Review

Hello there! I’m a high school student who got acceptance into Pitt! I would like to learn more about the pre-medical experience at Pitt. Here are some questions

  • what is the environment at Pitt? Collaborative vs competitive. I know the pre-med track is very competitive and difficult, but how is the vibe there? I have t been able to visit due to Covid restrictions, but I’ve been watching campus tours online
  • research opportunities: how difficult is it to engage in research? Are the professors open to talk to?
  • what are the medical related internship/volunteering opportunities? I know about UPMC, but are there others nearby as well?
  • how are the classes there? Any premed welder classes I have to plan for if I plan to attend?
  • any other information or stories the knowledgeable community is willing to share

Thanks a lot in advance, any advice is a great help. Happy Hollidays!!

Hi. Parent of freshman at Pitt. She’s in Honors, Neuroscience major and in a variety of clubs. There’s a club fair during welcome week and many opportunities to get involved.

Environment: everyone is incredibly nice on campus and collaborative. Also 90+% of students, faculty and staff are vaccinated for covid and mask wearing is required indoors, except in private spaces.

For medical /volunteer- UPMC(multiple locations), Children’s. Also various student medical related clubs. Other information available from PreHealth advising.

Research - Many research opportunities. She emailed professors several weeks before start of term. Started in a neuroscience lab this fall and will continue in spring.

Classes- there’s adjustment freshman year. Study and prepare for classes and exams. Study with friends, use Pitt resources (Study Lab, Chem Dept tutoring sessions, peer tutoring session).

Culture: urban campus, lots to do on campus and in city of Pittsburgh. Free metro bus is included in tuition, and many sport and arts events have student discounts. Many different ethnic restaurants in Oakland and Pittsburgh. $125 gets you Panther pass- all football home games in Panther Pitt at stadium(shared with Steelers), access to basketball games at the Pete and tshirts). They have shuttle buses near dorms to transport students to/from football games.

Cool campus events - Welcome week for all Freshman, Lantern night, Homecoming Friday- band snakes around campus, Cathedral Ball in Dec in Cathedral of Learning.

Good luck with your decision, keep learning and you will find the best fit for you.
H2P (Hail to Pitt!)
