University of pittsburgh scholarship question

Does an acceptance into the Honors Program indicate that I may be receiving some merit scholarship also?

Because I received my acceptance into the Honors Program last week and I’ve been anxiously awaiting any sort of scholarship letter.

NotToo, it’s a separate review, but with your stats I would think you would get some merit scholarship since they indicate you’d be eligible starting at 1400 SAT and top 5% of class. But, no, honors college acceptance does not automatically mean merit scholarship.

^^ Does it indicate that you MAY be getting money? Yes. But by no means is it a guarantee b/c they’re separate processes. Of course, those invited to participate in the honors program have higher stats and thus more likely to get $$$. If you are very interested and have the time, you should check out the accepted students thread to see the connection between honors acceptance and merit aid.

well if you get accepted in the honors college, there is a much better chance you will also get merit than if you were not accepted to the honors college; however i think this is only because both call for competetive grades and scores.

Can a person ever get merit money and NOT be in the honors program?

If you don’t want to be in Honors, I’m pretty sure you don’t have to be. Also, people have been saying that basically anyone can take an honors class as long as they ask for permission. I’m under the impression that Honors really isn’t that great; I’ve been invited or considered eligible and received full tuition, but I don’t think I’m going to do honors.

Not according to Motion12345

lol yeah, read the subsequent posts. Everyone ripped into motion, seeing as how he/she is still in high school and hasn’t even been involved with it

Oh wait, I see you were one of us :)

Referring to the odds of scholarships if there is an honors college acceptance:

Approximately 20% of applicants are accepted to participate in the honors college. And about 800 applicants (by the priority deadline) receive a Chancellor’s Nominee ($2,000/$10,000) OR Full tuition scholarship- which is about 4% of total applicants.
So if my number are correct, about 1 in 5 who are invited to the honors college receive one of these two main scholarships…
I see no reason why someone who isn’t accepted into honors would receive a scholarship (with the exception of possible URM status??- which is a different scholarship)

From the UHC website:

<<how many=“” students=“” are=“” invited=“” to=“” apply=“” for=“” chancellor’s=“” scholarships?=“” envision=“” this:=“” about=“” 700=“” invitations=“” the=“” scholarship=“” mailed=“” students.=“” of=“” these,=“” 450=“” applications=“” will=“” be=“” returned=“” us=“” complete=“” (the=“” application,=“” essays,=“” and=“” two=“” recommendation=“” letters).=“” these=“” 100=“” nominees=“” interview,=“” 10–12=“” chancellors’=“” scholars=“” enter=“” university=“” each=“” fall.=“”>></how>

For scholarship consideration, you have to have the stats they are looking for and usually those stats will get you acceptance in the Honors College. However, it doesn’t mean you will get a scholarship just because you have been accepted in the Honors College.

It was my understanding that they made 10-12 offers. If an offer is declined, it is not offered to another deserving student. Therefore, there might be fewer than 10-12 chancellor’s scholars in a given year.

That is also my understanding :)

kind of late but i got a combined score of 1820, rank 56/370, and had a 3.5UW and a 4.29W gpa, and i got a scholarship from pitt…

Did you or did you not receive a scholarship? Within minutes of this post you posted on a separate Pitt thread stating that you have not received a scholarship notification. Students have come to rely on CC to assess their chances, so we should all strive to post reliable information–or nothing at all.

I recieved my acceptance letter to pitt 2 days ago and it said nothing of honors or scholarships, i have a 3.7 uw GPA, ranked top 10%, will graduate with an honors diploma, 29 ACT and 1190 SAT(reading and math), I was wondering what my chances of getting a scholarship is and when I would hear about an offer

You need an ACT of 33 or 34 USUALLY, or an SAT of at least 1450 (combined CR and M).

I have a 1470 SAT (Math and Reading only, a 2250 combined) and received a letter from the Admissions committee saying that they really liked my essay. I got accepted, but I haven’t heard anything from Pitt about scholarships or the UHC. I have a 3.34 UGPA (which probably hurts my chances, but also a 4.1 WGPA) and I’m in-state. Any chances?

Hey my SAT was 760 M, 690 CR and 720 W and I had a GPA of a 97 UW/ 98 W.

ACT 33

I’m at Pitt on a full tuition scholarship + 4,000/year engineering scholarship.

I am OOS from NY.

Photo,
my son has your same 1470 SAT and a 33 ACT and was admitted to the Honors College.
We are in state and he would enter as a pre med.
He received the minimum scholarship amount.
It’s an interesting discussion in that I was not aware the the offers were purely score driven(as well as in vs. out of state?).
We actually know people with lower scores that have been offered full tuition.

Several have asked about the possibility of a reevaluation for scholarship possibilities. Is this an option? My son is very interested in Pitt and all it has to offer in the field of medicine.
