University of Puget Sound

Anyone know about this one ? Can you guys give me some personal opinions about this school ?

How is the Economics, Sociology, and History major here ? I am not too sure about my major but pretty sure the top choice is Economics.

How about other aspects besides academic ??

Any input ?

UPS, as it is known in the Northwest and in California, is a highly respected school. The main campus in Tacoma is gorgeous with stunning views of Mt. Rainier. Social life is quite active and variable. You have all sorts of kids there, some who prefer the outdoors/hiking/skiing opportunities and others who like exploring city life in Tacoma and nearby Seattle, or even down to Portland. Its largely an upper middle class campus with some preppies and yuppies, but also some granola crunchers too. Its very friendly and the faculty are warm and encourage mentoring. Its a wonderful feeder school for graduate programs as well.

If its high on your list, you have made a wise choice. The academics are tough...its not a slacker school. You work hard and play hard.

Good luck.

So are you going to UPS now ?

What made you choose UPS ?

How are Economics, Sociology, History majors there at UPS ? Probably maths also

No. I dont attend UPS. I am a parent. I just know it by academic reputation and inlaws who live in that area. I have been on campus many times.

On specific majors and programs its hard to judge undergraduate programs. Most rankings are from graduate programs. But UPS is a solid school and being a liberal arts school will have wide strength across the board. And you wont decide your major in Freshman year anyway.

There are several private colleges in the Northwest which deserve recognition, each offering some unique experience:

Whitman College in Walla Walla.
Gonzaga University in Spokane.
Seattle University in Seattle.
UPS in Tacoma.
Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma.
Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
Lewis and Clark College in Portland.
Reed College in Portland.
University of Portland in Portland.

All of them are fine schools and offer a high quality education and wonderful educational experience to their students. But UPS is highly regarded in the business community in the Northwest. If its your choice you have chosen well.

Thanks a lot.

I just found out at UPS and kinda glimpsed through the website. How competitive is UPS ?

Any more input ?

I call it a highly selective school. Not in the most selective ranks with the top tier. But a second tier school. Its considered an LAC.

The stats are as such: Freshman
Received: 5,273
Accepted: 3,502
Enrolled: 644
Graduate
Received: 489
Accepted: 465
Enrolled: 112

Test Score Ranges (Mid 50%)
Test Name High Low Avg.
SAT I Verbal: 690 570 630
SAT I Math: 660 550 605
Combined: 1,350 1,120 1,235
ACT English: 31 25 28
ACT Math: 29 24 26
ACT Reading:
ACT Science:
Composite: 30 25 27
GMAT:
GRE:
LSAT:
MCAT:
DAT:
Recentered SAT scores: Yes
CLEP Credit: No
Advanced Placement Credit: Yes
Average GPA: 3.54

What that all means is that while they have a fairly high admissions percentage (over 50%) its clear that the kids who apply are all highly qualified and have avg. SAT's of 1200 or better and a 3.5 or better gpa. There are plenty of kids at UPS who have very high stats. You will be challenged if you attend there. Its not known as a slacker school. You will work hard and have to put in plenty of effort to get decent grades. Its an upper middle class kind of place, though they do give financial aid. It has always enjoyed a reputation as being one of the gems of private colleges in the Northwest. Some kids prefer going to school in Seattle, and pick Seattle University or Seattle Pacific University (for similar private school experiences). But UPS has a gorgeous campus, plenty of campus life and activities. Tacoma has undergone a renaissance in recent 10 years or so. It has a nice downtown on the water and great restaurants and shopping. UPS has wonderful internships and job opportunities for its graduates.

Again, you have made a fine choice if this is your number one or number 5. Regardless, its a great school. I recommend it highly to anyone who shows interest and has the stats to get in.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot.

I think UPS is on my list now.

How's the weather in Tacoma ? I am not really familiar with the west coast.

Here are my stats (it's a link to my thread)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/578907-i-need-help.html

What do you think about my chance ?

Okay. First, the weather in Tacoma is like it is in Portland and Seattle. Its gray and cloudy a lot of the school year and it may rain a fair amount, though its more like drizzle. But that means SNOW in the mountains and Mt. Rainier has EXCELLENT skiing nearby. Paradise Lodge is famous. You get used to the weather eventually. But its not sunny southern California. On the other hand, its great starbucks weather and conducive to studying.

On your chances. You said your stats were 2050 and then you said you had high scores that totalled 2150 and I am confused on what they are. You listed some high end schools in the east and those are reaches. Lafayette is a high match and Skidmore is a match. Those are fine schools.

So where does UPS fit in and what is your REAL interest in UPS? Its important to convey real interest in attending in your applications. They can smell a looky lou a mile away.

If you are GENUINE about your UPS interest and your stats are above 2000, you stand a decent chance of getting in there. Whether you pick it over Lafayette or Skidmore, assuming you also get in there, is up to you. Each has its own personality and strengths. I dont do school bashing to I never say anything negative, even if I know something. But in this instance, Lafayette and Skidmore and UPS are all fine schools with really something special to offer to students in a unique setting. Its up to you to decide where you think you will do the best and thrive the most, and where you want to live and work when you graduate.

I hope that helps.
