University of Richmond or University of Miami?

As of today I have heard back from all my schools and narrowed my list down to these two schools. I plan to major in Psychology. UMiami is my #1 choice and URichmond is my #2, but I was accepted to the spring semester at UMiami and waitlisted for the fall. However, I have the option to attend American U with other UM students for the fall semester. Is coming in during the spring semester a big deal? I would know about 60 other people from the UM in DC program, but would the transition be tough? Also, I like parties as much as the next guy, but is nightlife it really as popular as some people say it is at UMiami? One thing though that I really love about UMiami is the sports and school spirit.

As far as URichmond goes I was accepted for the fall semester. I loved this school too when I visited. I heard though that there is grade deflation at URichmond, how bad is it? Academically is either school better than the other, or are they about the same? Which school would get me into the better grad school as well?

I would say university of richmond has a higher academic standard from what I’ve heard and read. us news rankings (though of course nothing to base a selection on) have Umiami at 44 on national universities and Urichmond at 28 on national liberal arts colleges

I agree, URIchmond is a great option.

It seems like Richmond wants you more than Miami, so I would go with Richmond. The kids I know who attend are very happy. You will have 4 seasons in Richmond.

The U is a great University with a very strong science program. Now you do not need to go to the American U. You could go to Richmond for a semester and transfer the credits in the Spring. The only advantage of the American program is that you’ll be with some 60 UM students and will not need to transfer credits. By going to Richmond in the fall you can get a feel for the college and then decide if you want to stay or go to the U. I think is the best of both worlds.

University of of Richmond all the way. Its student body is small, has bigger land area than University of Miami, better student to teacher ratio.

What about the grade deflation at Richmond though? Wouldn’t that make it tough to get into a good grad school?

University of Miami is not an option for you right now since you were waitlisted.

@XtremePower I was waitlisted for the fall semester but accepted to the spring semester.

Same decision here for my son. Got money from the U but nothing from UR. Hoping to do some negotiations with UR to try to get something because he is interested in the Business School and UR’s is by far better than UMiami. According to the reports, UR is better academically, more kids graduate in 4 years, and with smaller class sizes, the professors can really engage. Also, I think its a better learning environment. That being said, you can get a solid education at UMiami and have a great time, especially if you are looking for great school spirit/sports!
