After reading my son’s email, it said that each person is notified at a different time, I got the impression after their mid term grades came in. HIS date is 1/19 for submission of extra stuff (not a ton of stuff), it said on the email that everyone got a different date. SO, based on the fact that his mid-terms were sent in yesterday at like 3 pm and then we had an email right after 9am, it seems they wanted the mid terms just to verify their decision. They probably have already put the kids in the list of who is in, but need mid terms. As to the extra submission stuff, looks like they give you a week (or 6 days to be exact) Good luck everyone. Also, no notification if not chosen, so once mid terms go in, if you don’t hear in a few days its probably a no go.
@ZBD5421 Nope, mid-year grades have nothing to do with semi-finals. They aren’t available in time for most applicants. That was just a coincidence for your son.
just want to clarify on what @phoenixmomof2 said. They do NOT need mid-year grades to select semi-finalists. However, they want your mid-year grades in order release your finalist decision (they can make a decision without it), because with your finalist decision comes your official acceptance, if you make the finals. They release finalists through february and into march even, so this shouldn’t be a problem with any high school.
YES @guineagirl96 - you are correct. I was referring to the semi-finalist notification.
Found this thread, any tips for a junior applying to Richmond next year before the Richmond Scholars deadline? It is my number one choice and I want to major in biology or biochemistry. Congrats to all of you, I can only imagine how excited all of you are.
I called today, the receptionist told me they notify “sporadically,” and that it seems to be random…
I’m still hoping for mine to come (3.94 UW GPA and a 2160 SAT). I’m starting to get slightly more anxious with the increasing number of people that seem to be hearing back :-S
i.
For the Science Scholars, we have to submit a summary of a project or an academic competition. What is the summary of academic competition? Can anyone share your experience?
Is competitive debate and speech academic competition? Also, do we just email our essays in? Sorry if I seem naive
Never mind I figured it out!

Only 14 more days in January…I’m starting to get anxious
I got notified like 5 days ago-I think they definitely do it in multiple rounds. I think all the semi-finalists are notified by Feb 1. GPA 97.25 (weighted) SAT 2190 but ACT composite of 35. NHS president, debate club, Model UN, 4 years cross country, miscellaneous volunteer work with kids, lots of APs. But honestly I think my essay must have helped the most because a lot of the semifinalists seem to have much more impressive stats. Does anyone know how many semifinalists are selected?
@ancientmali last year there were 425 semifinalists. So around 400-450.
Wow that is a lot! @guineagirl96 I saw on a prior thread that you’re a Scholar at Richmond. How do you like it there?
@ancientmali It’s pretty great! I love the campus environment, the small class sizes and professors, and dhall has amazing food. My schedule’s kinda insane, but its manageable. I’ve had trouble getting into my math/cs classes directly since they’re sophomore/junior level (im a freshman), but I’ve gotten into every one so far by working with the department chairs (who are very friendly!) and getting overrides into the classes. They work with you to make sure that you can take a class in the department that will apply to your intended major (or minor or gen ed), even if its not the class you wanted originally (which has happened to other freshman who had more flexibility on which courses they could take), which is really nice. I’m an artist scholar, so Im pretty active in music, which keeps my evenings pretty busy, but I’ve made lots of friends in the music department because of it.
@guineagirl96 That’s really great to hear! I’m glad you’re enjoying your experience. I’ve been looking into some similar schools (washington and lee, davidson, sewanee). I’m from NY so I’m wondering whether UR feels “southern” or if there are a lot of kids from across the country…?
@ancientmali definitely doesn’t feel southern (unlike sewanee for example, was there for a summer music festival). Im from northern virginia, and VA itself is not really southern depending on the part of the state (the big cities like RVA are not southern feeling at all). The campus itself is small and self contained, but its right outside the city limits. There are a lot of kids from all over the country and all over the world for that matter. I applied in late November for the program, but I haven’t heard anything yet. When should I expect a notification?
@chocohearts08 notifications will be made by the end of the first week of february. Note that only semifinalists are notified, not those who are not selected. Last year, over 6,000 students applied by the scholars deadline, which is too many students to notify, since only 425 were chosen as semifinalists.
