Hi All,
So I am struggling to decide if I should go to the University of Rochester or not and would really like some help. If any current students or past students could give some comments on their experience and why they love the school and why they dislike it they dislike the school that would be great. No hate rants or love rants please. Please comment both the best and the worst things about the school in each post. Thanks!

I suggest you ask on the 2018 FB page. Many students hang out there. Very few (if any) are here.

Best wishes on your decision!

Okay, but I’m a parent, and I don’t think we’re allowed on the 2018 Facebook page - are we? So perhaps those of you (parents and/or students) who frequent this forum could respond to the OP’s question.

When I asked my guy what he likes/dislikes he told me:

Likes:

VERY in depth academics - challenging courses - loves most professors

Great friends interested in both being part of study groups and having fun doing other things (clubs, dance, intermurals in his case, but also things like semi-impromptu snowball fights)

Many research options

Dislikes:

Not much. He did end up saying maybe the dining hall, but then quickly added that there were other places to eat with his dining plan.

There are some students who party too much and want others to help them with their studies after they put in nearly no effort. He says his group has learned to ignore them, but it’s annoying that they can keep asking…

I asked if winter bothered him (it WAS a reason he almost didn’t apply) and he told me, “Not really. We don’t have to shovel.”

I would say U of R is not a good School unless you are an A student in High School (like SAT north of 2100). My son was a B student in High School who would have done very well elsewhere, but U of R did not even allow him to complete a Major in engineering, he had to be satisfied with a Minor. However, he still was able to get a Masters Degree in Engineering area of his choice with a very respectable GPA from another school (even though none of the U of R faculty even bothered to reply to his requests for recommendations to apply for Grad School)

Love:
-Abundant Opportunities for research
-intense academic environment
-Work hard play hard attitude
-Close-knit Greek community. Not your average frat boys and sorority girls. All are smart and driven and its not obnoxious. Great way to make friends and be involved in the community. Doesnt define you at all, there are TONS of engineers and high achieving individuals in the greek system. i personally feel theres an organization for everyone
-Unique Brain and Cognitive Sciences Major

Dislike:
-people here are almost too smart here. So many engineers and premeds. You may feel like you have to overachieve just to be the norm. A lot of people doublemajor and stuff which is good, but if you’re someone who isnt a genius or if that just isnt you, its easy to feel like youre not up to par with the standard
-food is meh. but could be worse
-Administration can be a little overbearing. general dislike of the administration throughout the student body

Dining services got ranked 7th in the country.
I was there 25 years ago. Here are my comments based on that experience and feedback from lifelong Rochester residents.
Biggest negative is that Rochester the city has withered a bit along with the contraction of Kodak and Xerox. The university is now the biggest employer. Weather in the winter is also a negative. Not so bad as long as you live on campus.
Positives are academic reputation and research. Lots of money available for scholarships.
This is an old thread but others may look. I think one of the positives is that the curriculum is an open type of curriculum especially if you are an engineering major. Engineering majors only have to do one cluster. A cluster is 3 classes in a particular focus from the list of approved clusters. So besides taking a writing class which everyone must take even if you got a 5 on the Eng Lit and Comp in HS, you can choose what you want to take classes in.
There is no required American History, Psych, Soc or Language classes you must take. That means you can take classes you want and possibly do a minor if you have many classes in one focus area you like.
How is the undergrad business program at Rochester? Does it have a good standing with employers? Please answer!! Thanks.
Newly re-launched (BS Bus) a few years ago. Not its own school. Much faculty is from well-known grad school. I can’t imagine they have an alumni network and the course descriptions are quite vague as to who is teaching them.

I know nothing of the business school. I suggest you contact them and see if you can email any of the graduates who perhaps work in the area you are interested in.
