University of Rochester Class of 2021 Regular Decision Discussion

@Arunga I chose August 2017

@CSGuy123 U of R does give FA, but I wouldn’t expect too much. I’m a domestic student and they gave me $21k merit aid and literally $0 in grants/loans even though my EFC is $15k (I got full aid at other schools).

@CSGuy123 U of R meets 100% financial need of international students so I can guarantee you will receieve enormous financial award ^^ Im also an international student who just received my package and It meets my EFC !!

hey is there any transfer student here? my portal shows its at step 5. Anyone knows how long will it be to get the decision from then?

Hi!
I’m another transfer student.(international but went to college in the us) Actually my portal still shows I’m at step 4. It’s been 5 weeks since they started to review my application, so I think it’s about time to hear back from them.

What does it say when you are at step5? I thought step is where we get the result.

@m36aF21 it says

Step 5
A decision has been made on your application. If you are a Dual Degree Eastman applicant, please refer to your Eastman notification to view both decisions. If you are not a Dual Degree Eastman applicant, you will receive a notification soon.

And i do not know how soon it is. i have been waiting for a day and i havent got my decesion

@dabdanze92 I believe you’ll get it within a day or two.
For me, I got my decision letter about two days after my portal status changed to step 5.

@dhracoon93 great!! Thank you

@dhracoon93 btw did you get the notification by email or on the portal?

@dabdanze92 i got an e-mail notification. But it’s just a “notification” that tells your decision is ready. You have to log in to your portal in order to view your decision.

@dhracoon93 great!! i got an email today and i got in! Thank you so much!!!

@dabdanze92 No worries :slight_smile: congrats!

@dabdanze92
Thanks for your reply and congrats!! Hope I’ll get the same decision…! :slight_smile: haha

Hey @Zorba5398 :slight_smile: I’m an international too but I got waitlisted. I’m just worried cause the amount of aid I need is a lot . Almost close to full tuition. Do you think its still possible for anyone in my situation to get in,given that I am an international student? And does anyone know if the Rochester Global scholarship is still up and running?

Hey so am I the only one who committed over three weeks ago but havent received anything after that? Like some kind of confirmation email or instructions for housing or for what we need to do next? What about those shirts that some people received? Is that not for all? Is Rochester is slightly lacking in instruction or is it just me… Help please

@hum257 I think U of R is somewhat lacking in communication/marketing. After receiving acceptance from Northeastern and UR, we received one mailing from UR and it took a long time. Meanwhile, we were constantly receiving mailings from NEU from everyone from the President to a parent to a student. In the end my daughter picked UR but NEU really made it difficult to say no due to their hard sell. I think UR could improve in this area and maybe their yield would increase. Best of luck…it’s a great school!

D is on a waitlist from UofR. Just checked the US News 2018 rankings for engineering and UofR seems to have dropped in rankings, and now is tied with the school my D is currently committed to. BTW, very happy with that school if she does attend.

Those rankings are pretty much useless. FWIW, Syracuse and Clarkson are “tied” with U of R in these rankings. While both are fine schools, they don’t really rival the caliber of student that comes out of Rochester. You can argue that the curriculum style is different at those schools, but as an employer, I’d be far more impressed with a degree from U of R than the other two - not that it really matters all that much for an undergrad engineering degree.

While I wouldn’t say the rankings are useless, I just wondered why UofR’s engineering ranking dropped so much. There must be a factor(s). My take is that my D would be on the higher end of accepted students where she is committed to whereas D would be in the lower end (score wise) of the accepted students at UofR. D is also currently waitlisted at Lehigh and RPI.

@RocEng I’m assuming you went to or are at UofR engineering? If so, would you mind briefly telling me your experience? My D will be studying Mech E. Thanks.

@renaissancesoul I have two UR engineering kids: son is a junior in ECE and daughter graduated last year in Optical Engineering. Both have had great experiences at UR. Since you have a D, I’ll focus on my D (who entered UR thinking PoliSci, but took an Optics course as a freshman and decided that looked fun). She had great internships and graduated with a great engineering job at a top company. She made good connections with professors and other engineering students during her years at UR. I saw her confidence grow over 4 years at UR (voted president of her sorority as a sophomore). I have met a number of Engineering professors at UR and found them engaging and student-oriented.

I respect the STEM-humanities balance at UR, the Take5 program, and ability to try many subjects before deciding on one’s major. Campus is beautiful and reputation is strong.

I don’t know Lehigh, but I do know and respect RPI. Young women in engineering need to be confident, especially so at tilted ratio schools like RPI. Of course UR is more 50-50 campus overall.

Good luck with your D’s decision.
