University of Rochester Decisions - Entering class of 2010

The Renaissance scholarship is not a “full ride”-- it’s full tuition. Not the same thing. Full ride is full tuition plus full room & board.

[ *] Job/Work Experience: Work for my parents (they are SBO’s), school
[ *] Essays (subject and responses): Diversity was about how I am similar to my minivan, and how that makes me unique. Quirky, risky, possibly a bad essay, but I thought it best defined my diversity. (yes, I’m a cracker ;))
[ *] Teacher Recs: who the heck knows?
[ *] Counselor Rec: see above
[ *] Applied on: 12/1/09
[ *] Hook (if any): Ohioan???
[ /list][ b]Location/Person:[ /b][ list]
[ *] State or Country: O-H-I-O!!!

[ /list][ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc:[ /b] Never did an interview, talked to an admissions rep, BUT U Roch was my first choice school. However, due to my current financial and social situation, I don’t really think attending is practical despite how well the school matches my interests…

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:

Counselor Rec: Excellent.
Applied on: Day before deadline…
Hook (if any): The news magazine. Founding the Young Democrats and being a humanities fellow probably didn’t hurt, either.

Ethnicity: White.
Gender: Guy.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc:
I’m really excited, actually! UR is the first school of note to which I’ve been accepted, and I’m liking the school a lot now that I’ve taken the chance to learn more about it. I’m a Renaissance and Global Scholarship finalist, but I’ve yet to decide if I’ll be attending the interview weekend. The thought of missing school and driving six hours for a chance at getting a financial aid package comparable to those at no-loan liberal arts colleges (I’ve a fair amount of need) isn’t too attractive to me. But I haven’t yet visited the campus, so I suppose it may be wise to do so…

Regardless, I’m pumped! :-D

If I don’t get in to any of my other reaches (which I might not) it’s going to be UF vs Rochester if they come in with the money… This school seems really awesome and with a 29 ACT, graduating high school in only 3 years (i’m 16) I think I should be verrrry glad that I got accepted.

Accepted:

I am not going to post the number stats (SAT’s especially) because they have nothing major to do with the admission (unless you have significantly below 1900-2000 base). Decent essays, good GPA, and enjoyable EC’s did it for me. Instead of stressing over SAT’s and studying for 5 hrs. a day for it, join a club in which you enjoy because it will help you more with getting in (also seconded by my interviewer).

Scholarships: Renaissance & Global Scholarship finalist; another $15k/year confirmed
Quite a pleasant surprise, especially for the scholarships. My stats were by no means outstanding - I had good scores but weak ECs, weak recommendations and mediocre grades. Either they liked my essays, or they put a heavy emphasis on the SAT. Hope this helps; good luck everyone else.
