University of Rochester Decisions - Entering class of 2010

When you take a close look at the students who are finalists for the Renaissance scholarship, it looks pretty apparent that Rochester is looking for diversity, geographical and ethnic, with this group. Students named as finalists who have posted their stats aren’t necessarily of the highest stat variety nor the great EC variety, although I’m sure that a few are. That’s NOT meant as an offensive remark, just as an observation. I’m sure that lots of kids who attend Rochester are from the NY area, and this wonderful merit scholarship gives Rochester a chance to make themselves known in areas where they might not ordinarily draw kids from.

I agree that diversity probably has something to do with it. From the information booklet:

An interesting fact from the finalists’ letter:

This seems to be higher than previous years; since they invite 75+ finalists, there must be 20+ Renaissance scholars. I think there were around 10 Renaissance scholars in previous years. This agrees with what they say about expanding the program this year.

ironclaw, thanks for posting this info from the Renaissance booklet. It confirms my observations.

Also, just an FYI… Rochester is typically looking to enroll students with “edges”, not necessarily the traditional “well-rounded” student. So, while a student’s overall GPA and SAT score may not be the at the top of the applicant pool (though most Renaissance Scholars are), that student may have done incredible work in Physics, for example, both in and out of school. Taking and doing well in high level physics courses, conducting research in a summer internship, securing grant money for individual research, etc. So, the potential Physics major who has an accomplished resume in physics, but happened to be a B- student in English and History isn’t necessarily out of the running for such a highly competitive scholarship. This especially makes sense when considering the body of this student’s work in the context of a curriculum as flexible as Rochester’s.

It is a very comprehensive process and takes a lot into consideration - but this is one perspective of our review process that may help you to understand our philosophy a little better.

Even public schools gave me a LOT more than that. I am completely devastated because Rochester is the only school that I applied to that I felt had no disadvantages and that was a perfect fit for me.
[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc: I really like the atmosphere of UR. I love the freedom provided and the fact that the people there don’t segregate themselves. And I knew I wanted to live in/near a city so yeah. But the best part is the freedom: when I visited Northeastern (they don’t have my major) and I asked, “well could I make mine” and they’re response was along the lines of “… you can’t make your major. I mean, they’re our MAJORS, you can’t change them…” and he looked at me like I’d grown two heads.

When I visited last week, I had a question about my major (Archaeology, Engineering and Architecture) and I was really confused about THAT all meant. So they were just like, here, you can go talk to the division head of your major! and I saw him in under half an hour and we talked and he explained a LOT. He really loved his subject and he was great. I just like how I had a question and they sent me right to him instead of BSing it.

This is actually the school I’m going to go to unless I get into Brown. THen I’ll probably go there unless they give me a really bad financial aid package.

BTW, sorry about the funky grammar of this thing, I was typing with my laptop laying down with it right on my stomach so my hands were all scrunched up and the shift key was hard to reach :)

Job/Work Experience: N/A

Essays (subject and responses): Wrote about specific things I enjoyed when I visited Rochester, especially the Gleason library lol but also mostly why it fit my personality and what I was looking for in the college experience. For the other essay I wrote about my infatuation with a native language spoken by about 200,000 people at most in rural parts of Norway, Sweden and Russia, called Northern Sami. I wrote about how I wanted to learn this language but how difficult it was for me to find a viable way to learn it, and then wrote about how I found a program online teaching me Northern Sami, but it’s completely in Finnish, so I’m learning both at the same time now :stuck_out_tongue:
