What do you think about the University of Rochester REMS 8 Year BS/MD Program?

D2 is a UR senior and has several friends who are REMS students. REMS students get first crack at hospital-based research positions, esp any that are work-study. Also get preference for placement in summer research @ UR–which almost always are paid positions.

For the most part the REMS kids are extremely strong students (ACT 33+; SAT 2200+ with wGPA in the 4.0+ range) and seem to be happy with their choice. Very few apply out.

REMS students are eligible for the same need and merit FA as the rest of the school and because many are among the top applicants stats-wise, tend to get merit aid.

Acceptance rate for REMS last year was under 10%, possibly as low as 5%. (UR only accepts about 12-15 student/year.)

Bump any other opinions?

Very hard to get in to, contingent on research as a high school student, and is just a very good opportunity. My brother goes to UR, and I visited. It is a beautiful school and is very goo academically. REMS gives you a guaranteed spot in med school as long as you maintain a high GPA (3.5+), why not do it if you could?
