I’m currently a freshman at The New School for Jazz and I’m not meshing well with the school. I’m looking to transfer for the spring to UR, but am still awaiting a decision. I was wondering if being a professional musician, throughout high school, would help me?
I had a 3.4GPA in high school and got a 27 on the ACT, but this was mainly because I spent most of my time outside of school, building up my career. I have multiple endorsements, business experience in the industry, and am well-known and well-respected in the drumming community. I have a lot of musical knowledge, audio engineering knowledge, and marketing experience. I want to major in music at UR, and have really good recommendations letters and did a great interview, but I’m still worried that my skills and experience will be overlooked. What do you all think? Do I have a chance?
I believe you have a chance. You sound just like me. Your experience will not be overlooked because it shows the best of you beyond the numbers. It is highly admirable you learn through social and experimental learning!
Trust me - you’ll be fine. I’m confident in your abilities! Did you apply directly to the Eastman School of Music? I’m not entirely sure how the process works for music majors.
That’s reassuring. I didn’t think I had the slightest chance and it was freaking me out. Thank you!
I didn’t apply to Eastman because I am currently at a conservatory of music and am looking for a more academic and more diverse education. I like that I can still take classes over there while still studying at UR!
@Silvd29 Got it! I understand where you’re coming from. My good friend is currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music and applied to the University of Michigan for transfer.
