I’m currently choosing between Emory University and the University of Rochester. My major for Emory is mathematics, and University of Rochester is statistics. I want to be an actuary in the future, which makes this decision very difficult.
The University of Rochester has an undergraduate certificate program for actuarial science, Emory does not. But, Emory’s ranking and reputation is more well-known.
Environment wise, they are both small schools and I was wondering what it’s like to be a student there?
What is the difference between the statistics program in Emory and Rochester?
Does having an extra certificate if I do graduate from the University of Rochester (if I choose it) make a big difference?
Internship and experience as an undergraduate would be more beneficial for my career at which school?
You’re asking a fairly obscure set of questions: how many people have information comparing these two schools on these metrics? I’d assume a pretty low prior for directly on topic responses.
Bad joke aside, I think the certificate has real value; it is a huge step toward becoming a working actuary and the website even says they encourage students to take the first 2 exams while in school. They also mention internships on their webpage, but honestly I don’t imagine finding a job with this training will be difficult.
Don’t know much about Emory and there’s not that much overlap visible in the questions asked by students because they’re in completely different regions. That said, my kid and friends describe UR as “nerd normal” or variations on those words, meaning people who study, who are genuinely interested in learning and achievement but who also tend to be pretty normal as people. As for rankings, they’re both very good schools so you’re not comparing across inappropriate dimensions.
My D was accepted at both UofR and Emory as we’ll. The Rochester cirriculam is winning out for her though. And the distance from home…we’re in New England. We visited UofR and loved it. We didn’t get to Emory.
Emory and URoc are very much peer institutions. A difference of 12 spaces in the ranking numbers hardly matters much to the vast majority of people, esp when rankings are rather subjective. Pick which place suits you the best or which finances suit you the best.
Personally, I have no idea how much the actuarial certificate would help, but it sure seems like it can’t hurt. Can you find someone in a hiring position for the job you want to ask?
If you are at all near Boston, US Air flies a couple of non-stops a day between Rochester and Boston. Rochester airport is a 10 minute cab ride from campus, and a 1 hr flight to boot. When D was there, Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break travel was done by air–so much easier and less time-consuming than buses or trains.
FYI, my kid’s bf is going to RocHack 2015 at UR this weekend. A 36 hour open coding event. (Rochack.org) And they’re heading up there later this month for a juggling thing. Point is: they maintain connections.
@MADad thanks. We are in Maine. But yes that’s probably what we will be doing. We are actually heading for Rochester tomorrow for the weekend. Driving. A final trip to make sure that Rochester is the right decision.
Yokennyr–hope you have good trip. We did that drive every late-August and May for 4 yrs while D was there. Not a difficult drive from MA, but a long drive. Once you clear Albany, travel is non-existent, as NY Thruway skirts the cities.
Think about stopping at Heid’s in Liverpool. Just off the Thruway in a Western suburb of Syracuse. A classic roadside stand of a place. Great sausages. Also very good fried fish.
If you haven’t been to Rochester, lots of good places to eat. From BBQ - e.g., Dinosaur BBQ, Sticky Lips - and many others, much on Park Ave and others in the South Wedge. Remember, nothing in Rochester is more than 10 minutes away.
Another vote for Sticky Lips - and in Henrietta, we also like Tully’s.
We’ll be there next week - watching middle son dance (Radiance - it’s a club dance troupe) and sticking around to watch the Ramblers (male acapella group) later that weekend just 'cause we like them.
Sticky Lips and Tully’s are already on our schedule…
One of my favorite places is Dogtown on Monroe, which is mostly hot dogs with various toppings. Local sausages. A really good vegetarian dog. Very funky place with pictures of dogs (duh) all over.
@Creekland - we are visiting next weekend. I’m an a cappella singer and would love to be able to hear the Ramblers. Are they performing Saturday night (4/11) by any chance?
@singermom4 My son tells me Saturday night (4/11) from 8 - 10 pm (he thinks that’s the time). He’s supposed to see that we have tickets and lead us around to where we need to go, etc. I’m looking forward to seeing them in person!
I don’t know if they tend to sell out in advance or if tickets will still be available at the door. We’ve never made it to a performance before as we had another son in school and live some distance away. Now we’re empty nesting, so our schedule is more freed up.
if you want to contact them to see about tickets. Or, if you send me a pm, I might be able to see if my guy can get extras if we figure out where to meet up.
Ok, it won’t keep the FB link, but they’re easily found by name. It says tickets will be available at the door (Strong Auditorium), but I honestly don’t know if they sell out or not. Middle son tells me they are popular - and I believe him. I’ve seen some of their YouTubes.
I did post on the FB asking about how to purchase ahead. Do you know how much tickets are? Maybe I will contact admissions and see if they can arrange for us and I will pay for them at the visit.
