University of Rochester

Does anyone here know anything about the University of Rochester? I am rather unfamiliar with it. Is it a decent school? I suppose that the location is not ideal, not the worst either. Are there any major downsides to the university? Major positives? Any comments?

Thanks.

Feels more like a large liberal arts college...great for humanities, beautiful campus, good merit aid. Free fifth-year, if you feel like your education was narrow in focus. Eastman is awesome for music. Decent sized city, with a number of distractions, although it is definately not NYC.

The University of Rochester is an excellent university that tends to be underestimated, perhaps because of its name. It is excellent in the sciences (esp physics, biology, optics) and engineering, music, English, linguistics, ecenomics, history, and political science. It has a very strong pre-med advising program. U of R is affiliated with the Eastman School of Music, the Laser Lab, and Medical School.

U Rochester is rather small for a university, so it has the advantages of a major university along with the "feel" of an LAC.

U of R is a Division III school. It lacks a nearby commercial district...you have to drive to get most places. Lots of activities on campus, good public transportation.

I think Rochester has a great cultural scene for a city its size.

What will your major be? Which state are you from?

I am from California (strongly desiring to get out) and I plan to major in art history.

I don't know if U Rochester is particularly strong in Art History but U of R operates (maybe owns) a large and beautiful art museum in Rochester, the Memorial Art Gallery.

Top notch school located in a very unsexy locale.

U of R has a good learning atmosphere because of the way it is isolated from the main city's distractions. The campus boundary is a river on two (?) sides and a cemetery on one side. It is a beautiful campus, I loved the place when I visited it. I got the impression that it is the place for anybody serious about academics. I think they have a good offering in art and visual studies, a major department in that area.
The university curriculum, I was told, was extremely flexible. The only required course was freshman writing and every thing else was up to the student to choose.

Any info on the dance program? There seem to be a lot of classes, but I can't tell from the website whether there's a major/minor in dance, and if there are, what the requirements are. Anything you can tell me would be great!

Is U R strong in biochemistry/ChemE?

URochester is well known for the sciences. Not sure for BioChem, but the Bio and Chem are great departments.
