University of Rochester

Hey guys!!
I recently applied to the U of Rochester (ED). I got a 670,680 and 700 in the SAT Math, verbal and writing respectively. I rank among the top 5 percentile in my school. I hardly had any preparation for my SAT 2 and got an aggregate of 2110 in physics, chem and math2.What do you think are my chances to get into the University?
Some of my friends thought i could have applied to a better institution. Do you think it was a good choice?

As long as Rochester was a great match for you, who cares? Rochester has some excellent programs (e.g. the sciences, econ, poli sci, music).

I know, but how do you see it in terms of recognition and prestige? Just wanted to know.

Rochester is quite prestigious and fairly hard to get in. For example, even with your strong stats, I would bet that you are not in the top 10% of their admitted class, which means little merit aid.

As for academics, all of Rochester's programs are well respected. The only problem with Rochester is that it is in Rochester.

Your stats are right in the middle of the 50% range for Rochester (Math 640-740; CR 620-720). So it's not a sure bet. Much depends on your GPA and course selection, which you didn't mention. (And your scores limit your ability to get into an Ivy league school - Rochester is just a notch below Ivy.)

As taxguy said, Rochester is already prestigious and is getting more well-known, prestigious and selective every year.

well i'm an american living abroad. so do you think being able to add to the diversity will make a difference?

U of R is an amazing school that I believe is always look for diversity. The only downside is that there's not that much to do in the city. But that's because I'm a native and all of the interesting museums are more tourist oriented. But their programs are amazing and the University contributes a lot to the city

U Rochester sounds right for you.

Ouch, taxguy. I happen to like Rochester, my hometown. I think there is lots to do and yes I like the weather.

i think your in

I like Rochester too (House of Guitars - amazing) ... but the part that the university is located in isn't too pleasing. I've been there a bunch of times, it's like one side is a river, one side is a cemetery, and the other is the ghetto.

The University of Rochester is a great school and if your grades, rigor of curriculum and essay are comparable to your test scores you should be admitted. The kids from my D's smallish public HS who have similar scores and GPA's in the 3.75 range have been admitted within the past two years.

Gomestar, I've been to U of R a half dozen times recently and have seen the Genesee River and the Mt. Hope Cemetery, but where's the ghetto? The campus is also bordered by the Strong Memorial/U of R medical complex, but I doubt anyone would confuse that with a ghetto.

right on the other side of it all is a tough part of town.

it's easy to avoid if you're on campus, you probably wouldn't notice. I usually went the med school route to get there, though one time I took another route and it was like ghetto, ghetto, more ghetto, university of rochester.

It's sort of ghetto except for Elmwood Ave. But I've always found the hospital across the street from a cemetary to be a little strange

did u end up getting in?
