University of Scranton

My daughter has applied to the University of Scranton school of nursing and was accepted. I would like to know what the school of nursing is like, where are the clinicals held and what is the atmosphere of the school like. Does the school promote a social environment? The area seems a bit down so what kind of life off campus. Can someone just give me an overview of the school and the area? Thank you very much.

My daughter went to Marywood in Scranton. The area is depressed, but there is still a lot to do and it is safe.
She lived off campus and never had any safety issues. There is a lot to do in the area. They had a bucket list of things to do before graduation and did not get to all of the wishes. Scranton is a party school - lots of Marywood students headed there on weekends.

Both of my kids graduated from Scranton and one lives there now. Both of them loved being at Scranton. Like any city, there are good and bad areas. The one who lives there loves the diversity of the restaurants available. Lots of smaller cafe/coffee places as well.

There is a ski area within a 10 minute drive, a mall within walking distance and another couple a bit further away. There are movie theaters. The Scranton Cultural Center is just a few blocks downtown and it hosts all types of performances. H and I are headed out there next weekend to see Jersey Boys. We have also seen Hello, Dolly!, Blue Man Group, and Midtown Men at the Cultural Center. Great shows. And we still love visiting Scranton. The people we have met and interacted with both on campus and in stores and restaurants in the area have all been so nice. They seem to always take the time to talk.

I am not up to date on the current student programming on campus. But there are lots of clubs, intramural sports and fitness options. Scranton is also big on community service, so there are lots of opportunities for that. Some courses even have a community service component.

It looks like their NCLEX pass rate has been over 90% for the past several years except last year when it was 86.9%. Scranton has three hospitals in close proximity, but I don’t know how clinicals work.

Scranton is small enough that students can get to know their professors and vice versa, yet large enough that they don’t feel smothered. One of mine started at a college about half the size of Scranton and was bored silly. Transferred to Scranton after one semester and loved it. Made friends immediately and flourished.

If you haven’t visited yet, you should plan to. When my first one first set foot on campus, they knew that was the place they wanted to be. If you need to stay overnight, I highly recommend the Hilton. Great hotel, reasonable price. If you mention you are visiting the University, they may have a price deal, but I’m not sure. You can always ask!

Thank you very much for the reply. It is helpful.
