university of Scranton?

I heard that this is a very good school, anyone gone there. Do they give out merit scholarships?

It is a wonderful school! Excellent academics. D just graduated with a double major and she grew so much as a person there. She received about a 1/2 tuition scholarship for her four years, plus some need based aid. Try to visit - either on your own or go to an open house. There is a truly a special feel on that campus.

Thank you for the answer about scranton univ. It looks nice on line, my dtr also wants to play volleyball there if she can. She is a pretty good student GPA 4.25 sat scores were 1260. Do you know if they have a strong biology program it looks like they do

LOL, my D's SAT's were the same! Yes, their bio program is excellent. Many pre-med students with a high percentage acceptance rate to med schools. D originally started as a chem major. It was interesting - she looked at several colleges and Scranton was the last one we visited. She knew as soon as she stepped on campus that was where she wanted to be.

Do you think half tuition could be a possibility?

I don't know. This was four years ago for her, and I don't know what the applicant pool is like now. She had a very good record (top 10%, AP and Honors courses, very good EC's, leadership). They didn't have a set criteria for their merit awards, they just notify you if you get it. If she likes Scranton, have her apply (they waive the fee for visit, or online app.) and see what they offer to compare with her other choices. D applied to 3 schools of different costs. They all gave her merit money with the least expensive giving her the least amount and the most expensive giving her the most. At the end, the cost of attendance would have been almost the same at each of them because of the financial aid.

I went to the website to check out the volleyball team - looks like they are pretty competitive.

Thank you so much for all of your help. Yes it does look like they are very competitive team that is what she wants. Is the campus very city like? MY dtr tends to really like the schools that building look pretty, grass and trees. I think you know what I mean. We are taking a ride there either tomorrow or Saturday. Going to go to Muhlenberg and then to Scranton. I feel like all I do is sit on this computer all day.

I have a good friend whose daughter is entering her junior year there (accounting major) and is very happy. We have a cousin who attended back in the early 80s and had a major in one of the sciences. I recall that she had no trouble getting a job in her field. Scranton is not a particularly attractive city (D and I looked at the University of Scranton-she was waitlisted there), but the campus is very nice. If your D likes the ski, there are ski areas that are relatively close.

A friends D graduated there a while back w/ a OT degree. VG program so I think their sciences are very good. She also played basketball...very competitive for DIII programs
Did not have any trouble finding a job in OT.
Only real drawback to Scranton is that some people may not like its location. So visit & see for yourself!

Does Scranton have a rigid core curriculum?

I wouldn't say its core is rigid...but there is a liberal arts core curriculum such as would be found at all Jesuit institutions.
There will probably be some math, science, foreign lang., phil or theo courses required of ALL students regardless of major. I'm sure their website will outline it for you.

marion1 ~ you asked if it is very "city like". Well, it is in the city, but it has a true campus. Funny thing, when we got there the first time, I thought it would be a waste of time - that she wouldn't like it because of the location (we live in a fairly rural area and that is what she is used to). How wrong I was! There is a nice mall within walking distance (Steamtown Mall), movie theaters, other shopping a bit further away. Montage Mountain is not far (15 minutes, if that), Wachovia Arena is about 20-30 minutes away. Please don't write it off without getting out and visiting the campus. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Do you have an appointment? You might want to call and see if you can schedule a tour.

Went there today. Just got back. I thought it was very nice. My d seemed like it, but I don't know if she loved it. It sounded like my d could get a good amount of money from this school so she is keeping it as a top possibility. We will go back at end of August when kids start showing up to get a feel. They seem to have a very good Biology program there.

Also by the way my d really loved the freshman dorms, said best she has seen so far. That's a plus.
