University of Scranton

I visited the University of Scranton this past spring, and I recently applied there EA. I was wondering if the people who attend the school like it, is the campus and surrounding area safe, does partying get out of hand, how good are the academics, are the students focused and involved in the campus community, etc?

my d also applied there EA. Although we don't know anyone who currently goes there, I've talked to a few who have graduated and they had only good things to say.
My d loved the compact campus. She is just not sure about how cold it will be. Also, we are not catholic and I'm not sure if that will have any impact on her experience there.

My D graduated from there in 06 and S is there now. Both of them have only great things to say about it. D was in the SJLA honors program and it impacted her tremendously. S did one semester at another college, then transferred in and is so much happier.

To address some of your concerns:

We are not catholic and my kids don't feel out of place at all. The Jesuits are a very welcoming, accepting, inclusive group.

The weather is about the same as northern NJ, lower NY area. I'm not sure where you are from, but yes, it can get cold and they get snow, but not like some of your northern NY areas.

We are pleased with the safety on campus, and they have been addressing some issues with safety off campus. S and a friend walked to the downtown mall at midnight last spring so they could get a new video game that was being released then, and they had no problem.

There are parties if you want them and there are people that don't choose to participate. It is your choice. There are other things to do and places to go.

We feel the academics are first rate. Their medical school acceptance rate has been around 93%, law school acceptances have been high. They make you work, but you get a lot out of it.

Focused students - many, yes, and there are always some that are not so much. And I would say that yes, many are involved in the campus community as well as the city of Scranton community volunteering in different areas.

The U of S just completed a beautiful new student center and a brand new sophomore dorm.

Our D got an excellent education there and S is certainly on his way to getting one. Their alumni network is very strong and passionate also. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

thank you, kitty, for you input. I got such a nice feeling about the school when we visited, although it was summer and we didn't see any students. My d plans to major in education and I like the program they have there.
The application was just sent in last week for EA. I am looking forward to hearing back from them to see if there will be any financial help (fingers crossed)

penny1121 ~ I sent you a PM!

I know several students that graduated from the University of Scranton, however, all were commuters who didn't spend much extra time on campus. They all liked the school, but I would ask about the percentage of commuters versus resident students.

My daughter is soph at Scranton and is loving it. She is an education major and has a large work load at all times. She does find time to go out 2-3 nights a week, and plays a sport for the university. The campus is always clean and she even got the chance to see McCain speak a few weeks ago. She attends church some Sundays, but religion is no way forced on you. UoS has been a great experience for all of us. Good luck.

Thank you so much for answering my questions everybody! I really appreciate it!

Its one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the United States, each of which are gems in their own right. The Jesuits really do a phenomenal job of undergraduate education. The President of Fordham University is Rev. Joseph McShane, SJ. He came from UScranton where he did a tremendous job. He is doing a wonderful job at Fordham now. (My D is at Fordham) I would strongly recommend any Jesuit college to anyone.

Most Jesuit schools run about 60 percent Catholic in the student body. Its not a dogmatic approach at all, though theology (usually 2 courses) are required in the core. But you have plenty of options within that department, including comparative religion. Its a philosophical approach, not dogma.

I am Jesuit educated and I can tell you that it has greatly impacted my life. I think you will be just fine at UScranton. They embrace students. You are not a number as you might be in a large state institution. Best of luck to you!

And don't forget, one of the nation's strongest programs in paper distribution management.

"And don't forget, one of the nation's strongest programs in paper distribution management."

LOL - There are so many very accurate references to things in Scranton and the area, it's fun to watch to see what we can find!

My daughter also attends one of the Jesuit universities (Marquette), and I am in total agreement with nocousin. Outside of BC, Georgetown, and Fordham, these schools don't often get a lot of "play" on CC, but they are great schools and well worth considering.

Isn't Scranton kind of sexy now because of the Office? (LOL!)

My S is also looking at Scranton.

We were concerned however by what seemed to be a relatively small number of students on campus at an open house on November 9.

This may have been due to kids sleeping in, Sunday AM etc, but wondered re the number of commuters on the campus.

The campus also did not seem very diverse, with many kids from PA, some NY and NJ, similar backgrounds.

The event staff/speakers were uniformly pleasant and well organized.

Appreciate any comments, as my experience and impressions are limited to a one-day visit.

Thanks.

oc1979 ~ The figures I could find on College Board, say that 86% of freshmen live on campus and 53% of all undergraduates live on campus. All freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus unless living with a parent or guardian. Upperclassmen may live on campus (housing is guaranteed for 4 years if you remain in campus housing) or some choose to move off campus to private rental houses and apartments. They are considered commuters even though they live right next to campus.

My S has never been at a loss for something to do or someone to do it with. I think he has been home only 2 weekends since school started and we only live 1 1/2 hours away. We will see him at Thanksgiving and then at the end of the semester.

Yes, a majority of the students are from PA, NJ and NY, but there are others. One of S's best friends is from the west coast.

If your S is at all interested in Scranton, my advice would be to go back during the week when classes are in session and get a feel for the campus. Perhaps you could ask to have him sit in on a couple of classes and eat in the cafeteria. Admissions is generally very helpful.

yeah, a second visit makes sense.
thanks for the info.

i applied EA to scranton and i was wondering if anyone heard yet?

I applied EA as well, and I read that they send out notification letters on the 15th, so we probably won't get the letters until the 17th. :-)

LOL. Sunday am tours? Well......how do I say this? KIDS SLEEP IN on Sunday's and yes, some may go home for a QUIET night on the weekend, do laundry, home cooked meals whatever. Its common at a lot of schools actually. Even state flagships.

Some kids stay up late on Saturday with "entertainment", or just yacking with friends and then sleep in on Sunday am. My D is at Fordham. Its not a "ghost town" on Sunday am, but it is very quiet. The cafeteria doesnt even open until later because there was simply no one for "business" in the early hours. Also kids sleep in to catch up on lost sleep earlier in the week. (and yes, the party animals are sleeping it off.)

So I wouldnt judge U Scranton by Sunday am being quiet. Its a fine school and if you liked it, then that is a really good "signal" it may be where you belong.

Good luck.

my D got in .... she heard on the 15th ... also got some nice merit $$!

Does anyone know when were the letters sent out? (I'm an international and all things take 7 days to reach me)
