For the past few years there have been requests by several posters to add University of Scranton to the list of colleges under Alphabetical listing. This is a real hidden gem that gets recognition from USNEWS, Princeton Review, etc. It certainly deserves to be on the cc list.
Why hasn’t this college been added yet? We are intersted to hear what others say about the college. It deserves its own thread.
Thank you.
We also had Marist on our list to visit, but ended up taking it off the list and I don’t remember why. According to US News, Scranton is ranked 7th in the Master’s north category and Marist is 15th. Marist has a lower acceptance rate - something like 34% compared to Scranton’s 66%. On the US News list for undergraduate teaching in Master’s north, Scranton is ranked 3rd.
I think they are comparable, with Marist being a little less expensive than Scranton. What programs are you considering?

Would you know anything about Scranton’s pre-med program? Also, is the surrounding neighborhood bad? Just want to start making a list for my son to consider and Scranton seems like a good choice for him.
As a guidance counselor and as an alumni of Scranton I feel comfortable recommending Scranton as great school for kids looking for a smaller environment, with great academic opportunities and an excellent extended reputaion. Terrifc placement in med schools, law schools and wall street among others. Jesuit tradition challenges you to learn to think, not just memorize material. I found that the philosophy and theology classes were a fantastic way to learn critical thinking without dogma or any pressure at all to conform to catholic orthodoxy. Great fit for kids seeking a school they will always be proud of attending.
In addition, they recently opened a new student center and sophomore dorm, and just broke ground for a new science building with a proposed completion date for fall, 2011. Pre-med is strong as are the other sciences. And as you can tell from Joe, they have a strong and passionate alumni base.
I have 2 kids that go/went to Scranton - one there now and one graduated. So if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Thanks Kitty 56. I am sure that I will be contacting you with questions. I am a Fordham alum myself, and I really like the Jesuit colleges. We are thinking of taking a drive to Scranton and taking a look. My son is only a Freshman but we are already looking into schools for him. I think it is a good way to keep him focused and interested in doing well in school. We live on Long Island, where are you?
You’re welcome to keep posting here, but you all may want to create a new thread in the University of Scranton forum now that you have one, and continue your discussion there
