University of South Carolina for engineering?

Anybody out there know anything about USC's engineering program? Ive heard very mixed reviews about it. I'm planning on majoring in civil engineering. I asked this under the engineering forum and figured I ask here also.

Engineering program is very good, with lots of opportunities for undergrad. research. Son is computer engineering, roommates are biochem engr. and electrical engr. The department is small enough that professors know you and take a personal interest. Son was accepted to both Clemson (with good reputation for engineering) and USC, but preferred USC. He was able to work as a research assistant last summer. A roommate of his is doing an internship this semester. Seems like a lot of opportunities are available at USC in engineering.

I joined the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering January 1, 2010 as Department Chair. I was the Chair at Case Western Reserve in Ohio before. I have a biased optinion of the program and believe it is excellent. (I would have not moved otherwise). If you have any questions, feel free to email me at rlm@cec.sc.edu

Bob Mullen

My son is looking for mechanical engineering with an eye toward aerospace. As the previous poster mentioned, reviews in engineering have been meixed. We are instate for Va, so UVA and VT are right under our noses. While my son is considering them, he thinks he wants to live in a new environment. He is a junior with good PSAT scores and great ECS. His grades are all A’s in honors classes or APS. Also interested in marching band. Any opinions.

Post 3: If the dept. was excellent, then why did they bring a chairman from outside of USC?

hokiefan, I sent you a pm :)

Mullenbob, my Son (currently a soph. in High School) is interested in engineering …do you have any recommendations on classes he should take to prepare him for that major? (He is already taking calc and will take Physics next year.) Our Dtr already goes to USC and he really likes the school.

bumping this up.

Many schools choose to bring in a new department chair from the outside especially when they want to grow. USC Engineering has been on the smaller side as greenville mentioned. Case Western Reserve has a very highly regarded program so this is VERY good news for USC.
