We often complain about administrations turning a blind eye to blatant violations and other negative behaviors that happen during Greek events. I am surprised and pleased by this development
My D has a friend attending the University of South Carolina…neither she nor my daughter are from areas where greek life is big…but the friend applied there because of an honors program that I guess is getting national attention. This girl is not a prude in any way…honestly, probably among the most social of my kid’s friends…but she sent a text last week to D that she was STUNNED…almost border-line scared…by the amount of drinking going on. So this is a good and brave move by the school!
According to the article, 13 out of 19 fraternities had recruitment suspended for alleged violations of the requirement that rush events be alcohol-free. The other 6 not in violation can continue recruitment.
SHope - have D tell friend to hang on and keep her eyes open. My D (honors at USC) was a non-drinker and so were most of friends and they were all normal fun kids. Some even in greek life. Not unusual for kids to go crazy with first taste of freedom. Happened at my other D’s selective LAC. Sad part is students wear “I’ve been out partying - look how grown up I am” like a badge of honor instead of exercise in stupidity.
Also glad USC clamped down on fraternities at start. They (frats) seriously need to re-evaluate the way they do business.
