University of South Florida vs. University of Central Florida

I'm a senior in high school, and have already applied at both schools. I've read up on the academic side of both, but could anybody who goes to either school tell me a little bit about what they like about the school, or what they don't like? I can't really get a good feeling of what it'll be like living at either.

I'm also probably going to join a sorority when I go to college, and what's the Greek system like? Is it easy to get around the campuses?

I’m a sophomore at USF. USF so far has exceeded all my expectations. Academically, my needs have been met; my professors and academic advisers are first rate and always helpful.

I’ve made many new friends at USF. I have a full schedule each day with studies, activities on campus, clubs, volunteer work, and hanging out with friends. There is always plenty to do at USF.

I am not in a sorority. I am a student-athlete and our coaches discouraged us from joining sororities because of time demands, though some of the girls are members. There is a really nice modern “Greek Village” right on campus with several sorority and fraternity houses clustered together. The village even has its own swimming pool and is located near a dorm area. The Greek system is active on campus and definitely something to explore.

Getting around campus is easy. I walk to most everything (I don’t have a car.) There are shuttle buses that scoot around campus all day, even having routes to the nearby shopping mall. Freshmen living on campus are allowed cars. Freshmen are required to live on campus, unless their permanent home is in the immediate area.

I live on campus and like the convenience. I would suggest trying to get into one of the older dorms that are closer to the classroom buildings. There are two dining halls near the older dorms, and additionally several fast food concessions and a Beef O’Bradys sports bar in the new Marshall Student Union nearby. The brand new dorm that houses about 1000 freshmen (it has its own dining hall…Juniper-Poplar Hall) is a kinda long walk to most classes.

I considered attending UCF and also some other colleges, but selected USF and I am glad I did. If you haven’t toured the USF campus, try to schedule a visit and check things out!

see well my bf is at USF and i am going to UCF both schools are pretty nice but UCF is larger in enrollment sizes. Visit both campuses because while they look the same on paper they are two differnt schools.

TOUR!!

The absolutely best way to know for sure is to VISIT both campuses.

Both universities are about the same age but their academic strenghts vary greatly. For example, USF’s Medical School is among the oldest in Florida and is home to a strong cancer research facility. On the other hand, UCF established their Med School three years ago and it just enrolled their first ever class. Both universities have med schools yet they offer completely different experiences.

Conversely, UCF’s Engineering College is nationally ranked above many, much older schools such as Clemson, LSU, Kansas, Alabama, Texas Tech, Tulane, Georgia, Miami(FL), and Oklahoma. USF and Florida State are not ranked. That does not mean their programs are not strong, however.

Each school also offers programs that the other does not. UCF’s College of Optics and Photonics (Top 5 nationally) is the only one in Florida. USF, meanwhile, has a stand-alone College of Marine Science.

A lot of times, it’s a feeling you get when you roam around campus. Wherever you feel you “belong,” that’s where you should go.

what does it matter where your BF goes ?

Thank you all so much! I’ve decided on USF. After touring both campuses, I definitely got the feeling that I just belonged in Tampa.

hey courtneyy92, im considering transfering to USF or UCF, but i live in NJ and cant really go visit campuses right now.
so can you tell us a little about your experience visiting both colleges?
and what you liked/not liked about each school?
and why you picked USF?
i would really appreciate it!
thanks in advance!

courtney, I’m glad you chose USF, I was pretty much in the same dilemma a week ago; but after visiting I decided on USF…“I also got the feeling I belonged there”.

oscarcollege, if you can’t visit, it really comes down to what are you majoring in?..what are you planning to do after you graduate?..After I visited, I can pretty much tell you that the difference between USF, and UCF campus to me is…USF feels more homey to me, as if you were with you family and friends in a sort of like a recreation park; everyone is really friendly there…I liked the campus a lot. On the other hand, UCF feels as if you were in an otuside mall plaza, or south beach…,all the buildings are beautiful, everything its pretty new…I also liked it a lot. To sum it down, both campuses are awesome,…USF gets like a B+, while UCF gets and A. Ultimately, I chose USF over UCF, becuase of my major, and because I want to go to med-school after I graduate.

Sorry it took me so long to get back!
Basically I chose USF over UCF because it just felt right to me. UCF was too close to home, about 20 minutes away, and I really wanted a new experience (which doesn’t matter to you; you’re getting a new experience no matter what!).

UCF was incredibly confusing in terms of getting around the campus. Although its one big circle, if you’re not too good with directions, its really difficult. I have a friend that goes to UCF and I’ve sat in on a few of her classes…they are HUGE! Sitting in on a few USF classes that were much smaller, I realized I would much rather learn in a smaller environment than one in which my professer doesn’t even know my name.

UCF is located in a really popular area; there’s always a party going on, and you definitely feel it. USF is right across the street from Busch Gardens (you can even see the roller coasters from the 6th floor of the library, which is pretty awesome), so there’s people all around campus, but you never feel it.

As dperalta said, it does depend on your major. I’m majoring in communications, with a minor in political science, which is absolutely perfect for my major. As for the campus itself, UCF’s campus is very new, which I, surprisingly, didn’t like. USF is a bit older, with beautiful brick buildings, and I completely loved the look of it. It does feel more like a home.

Academics are supurb at both schools, and UCF just handed out their 200,000th degree, so I can’t say much on that subject that you couldn’t find out on their website.
Oscarcollege, why are you considering transferring?

A bull is stronger than a knight, after all… ;)
