University of South Florida vs. University of Central Florida

Wow, I think I’m actually going to contact USF about this. This completely misrepresents our university and only hurts our school. They took that video in Ybor City, about 8 miles from here… I assure you, USF isn’t really like that. I suggest you go in person to tour both UCF and USF, then decide which one to attend.

Your absolutely correct!, it really hurts the school! to the point I could have been a potential student, but now I am second guessing. I would defenitely visit both schools, and see how the night life is.

Pleezzzzzz…give me a break. Everyone at USF has seen that video. What those guys did in that video on their own time independent of USF is their business. If they want to act like fools that is their own business. The video in no way reflects USF. If anyone wants to base a decision about attending USF or not based on that video–they are as much a fool as the guys in the video. BTW the UCF-USF football series history is USF 4 wins, UCF 0 wins—USF owns UCF!

dperalta, check this video out if you haven’t already: [YOUniversityTV: College Video Tours](http://www.youniversitytv.com/youlife/cvt.php?video_id=3695) … You said you want to see how the nightlife is, do you have any specific questions?

lizard, I disagree completely. This school has been struggling to get respect for quite awhile and videos like the one dperalta showed us do not help. I know I’m paying a lot of money for this degree and I don’t want it devalued by a bunch clowns on youtube… I wouldn’t mind so much if the video were titled differently, but it should not be called “University of South Florida Admissions Tour.”

-YES Gordon_Gekko I seen this video already.

 • lizard…I have not made a decision yet, the video just made me second guess my decision; and even if I were to base my decision on this video, I think that does not make me a fool. I would be a fool going to a school, where I would not feel comfortable. Remember, like I said in the beginning of my post, I am going alone over there; I have no realtives there, no high school friends, etc. But anyways I also agree with you, becuase its their own business to act how they want to act, and say what they want to say, but dont portray it as USF itself.

d, USF is building a giant new science building right now that should be completed Aug. 2011, which is when you would start your 2nd year of studies. Biology and chemistry depts. would use the new bldg. The bldg. is described on page 3 of this link: http://usfweb2.usf.edu/facilitiesplan/Projects/Major%20Projects%20Updates032610_w_Pics%20WEB%20SITE%20UPDATE.pdf

Not to wear it out, but one of the big football players in the youtube video–his mother is a preacher and I heard when he got back home his mother washed his mouth out so hard with a bar of soap he almost turned white. Again, the video has nothing to do directly with USF and is played up by some who think it is funny to stage it like it is some “official” USF “tour.” I think folks like that are simply bigots and racebaiters. If you have ever been to a football practice, that is how guys talk…actually–a lot coarser than in the video. Not saying that is how people should talk–it’s just the way it is.

hey guys!

I just came back from visiting USF, and UCF. What can I tell,…both school were beautiful. I definitely felt comfortable in both schools. UCF campus is a little nicer, since its newer than USF, but in no way USF is an ugly campus like I heard some people say, I actually think its pretty nice, and that video that I showed you guys before, like you said, in no way represents that campus. UCF campus gets like an A, while USF gets like a B…B+. For some reason I felt USF campus a bit more homey(more like home, don’t know if thats a word…lol), while UCF reminded me of sort of like an outside mall plaza, or south beach. Ultimately, I talked to financial advisors, students, and head departments, and realized that my best choice for pre-med was definitely USF. I am very happy I got the chance to visit both campuses, it gave me a much better perspective of things. Now I can proudly say I am a USF Bull!

BTW: I am planning to live in Poplar…seemed pretty nice to me, expect for having to share one bathroom with 4 people…any suggestions in housing choice, or dorms?

Welcome to USF! As far as dorms, you really can’t go wrong with any of them, they all have their own unique pluses and minuses. You’ll be okay in any of the dorms.

We’re glad to have you with us pal.

As far as housing is concerned, I guess JP is probably one of your better options on campus. If you live in JP you’d be close to most of your classes (I think science classes are over here at least), however we don’t have as nice of amenities as they do on USF Holly. The dorms on USF Holly (Argos, Holly, Kosgrove, the greeks, etc) have a lot more to offer like tennis courts, a larger pool, etc., so there will be some trade-offs. JP could be cool though, especially if you get one of the rooms with a view.

If you can do it, you should definitely live off campus. I have an apartment on campus and I pay $768 right now in a room thats maybe 8x12 and I share a bathroom. There are places literally right across the street that cost under $500 per month. I just applied for an apartment yesterday at 42 North. It’s 10x13 furnished with a private bathroom for $449, and it’s nicer overall than what you’ll get at USF… I’d recommend checking out 42 North, Malibu, and possibly Avalon Heights. In my opinion, Malibu is the nicest but more expensive than the other two I mentioned. Avalon really offers the most for the money but I’ve heard too much negative about it in terms of partying and crime. 42 North is a little further, but it seemed quiet and pretty nice for the money.

As far as dorms, I was considering the following three:

Juniper-Poplar

Beta

Kosove Doubles

Which of these three dorms you would recommend for a freshman that wants to get the college experience, but also be able to be focused in school? Anything you might want to warn me about these 3 doorms?..anything bad, or something I might not like?

BTW: I am REQUIRED as a freshman, to live on campus and get a meal plan for fall and spring terms, only through my first year. I read that Beta is the best for the first year experience, and transition to college for freshmans…true?

Here’s a College Confidential link with USF housing discussion:

Congrats on your decision to attend USF! I agree that it’s a great place from which to launch a medical career. My doctors, accountants, and a few business associates are all USF grads and they are very proud alums. I also think the USF administration has been doing a lot of positive things lately. During my time in the area I have come to the conclusion that USF is largely underrated. I think you will have a great time there.

thank you very much guys…and after visiting…I do agree USF is greatly underrated. Im happy with my decision.:)

Hi, so I am applying for my exchange program to this University. Now I’m getting worry because I’m reading that it’s insecure and the dorms are expensive, I’ve heard that the location is kinda far from everything and that it’s difficult to get to some places.
Can anyone give me a hand and tell me if I’m making a good decition?
