University of Southern California Music Industry Major

I applied to USC Thornton for their Music Industry program. Also, I’ve already been accepted to Belmont for their Music Business program (not as hard of a program to get into but it apparently has a 40% acceptance

My GPA is a 3.3. I know that it’s low but that’s because I didn’t do well my freshman and sophomore year but pulled it up to a 3.6 my junior year. I’ve dealt with anxiety and migraines for most of my high school career but have definitely improved and overcome them during my junior and senior year. I believe my high school is considered competitive and is not grade inflated. My ACT is a 25. I only took it twice.

I’ve been in choir all of my high school career. I sing and play piano and guitar. I’ve taken private voice lessons all of my high school career and took piano lessons during my freshman and sophomore years. Over the summer, I went to a three week singer/songwriter program in New York and recorded a couple demos. I’ve taken Music Business classes on my own and had an internship with an Entertainment Attorney.

I also was a camp counselor and have done that for the past 2 summers (and I’m planning to go back again this summer if I can). I have a passion for horticulture and have worked in my school garden. I hope to work in USC’s urban garden and take plant science related classes to fulfill science requirements and whatnot.

I had two really good recommendations written. One was by an English teacher that I’ve had for two years now and my voice teacher who has known me since Freshman year. The main admissions application has my English teacher’s rec and my Thornton application has my voice teacher’s recommendation.

I know demonstrated interest isn’t always taken into account at USC but I’ve visited the campus, went to a Q&A session type thing at my school, a “Meet USC”, and I did an interview. In my opinion, my interview went really well.

I know that I’m not their best applicant but I’m very passionate and hard working despite any circumstances.

Thanks for your time and responses! Good luck!!

Anyone? ; Please and thank you!!

Sounds like you have a great profile @aem2015 - I wouldn’t beat yourself up about a 3.3 GPA, which is pretty solid. I’ve heard USC is pretty competitive and I wish you the best of luck. Belmont has gotten a lot of industry praise and is considered one of the top Music Industry Schools in the country. Billboard Magazine wrote a great article on top schools to study the music business and both are on the list. (http://www.billboard.com/articles/business/6259155/top-music-business-schools-colleges-programs) My daughter is a year behind you and looking into many of the schools in the article. I’d love to know what other schools you’ve considered or applied to.

Thank you so much for replying @PopPrincessPop‌! I was also considering NYU, University of Miami (the one in Florida not Ohio haha) and University of New Haven (which is in connecticut and only about 2 hours away from NYC) but then I heard back from Belmont (my second choice) and decided not to apply at those schools. Thank you so much for the article! I actually saw it last year but have totally forgotten about it! Good luck to you and your daughter!
