is this true? ..

Old outdated stereotype. USC offers good financial aid and has pretty good outreach to lower-income applicants.

Heck, if I remember correctly, the median parent income for a student at UCLA was higher than USC.

Old outdated stereotype.

Here's the profile of the 2006 USC freshmen. It shows that >1/5 of the freshmen received merit aid & > 60% received need-based financial aid. To me, this really doesn't sound like the stereotype, as they do give lots better aid than many other schools, due to successful & generous alums. My S is a freshman at USC & has been loving it there--he's definitely not from SoCal, tho he has made some SoCal friends & friends from many other places. Unfortunately, he's not "rich" either, nor are we.

out of country? Your SN says Hawaii though... Well if you are from Hawaii, i'm from there too! And I'm also applying to usc.

i've been to hawaii once in my life [i'm from nyc] and I LOVED IT! i cant imagine leaving if i was a resident =) in fact, i would love to find a job/settle there in the future if that was possible lol!

LoL, I know what you mean, I love it here. But I'm looking for a college experience AWAY from my usual, Hawaii life (basically, I want to leave the house, and UH isn't very appealing to me). I know I'll miss the Spam Musubi's and the plate lunches, but oh well. Haha.

It gets very expensive here though =.

The academics are definitely improving, but the sterotype is still rather perdominant. Quite a few students are affluent and spoiled, but you would expect that at most universities. I was initially planning on applying, but an admission official was incredibly rude, so I decided not to...ruined my perception of the schoool.

My "D" is a freshman at USC and loves it there. Sure, there are some spoiled students with a ton of money, but you're going to get that anywhere. She had many other options; but in the end, wound up choosing SC. Has never regretted it and is VERY proud to be part of the Trojan family. IMO U can't go wrong choosing USC.

If your out of state, UCLA is just about the same price as USC, and USC will most likely end up being less with aid factored in. There are definitly alot of rich students here, but look around and there alot who had to work hard to get here.

For my S & many of his friends, USC with its generous merit aid was one of the cheapest options for attending school out-of-state.

By the way HI06, PLEASE don't reinforce the very WRONG idea that HI is a different country--we are a state tho frequently penalized for not being part of the contiguous 48. There are enough sophistocated folks who have learned enough history to learn that HI is actually a state. Actually, there is a very large # of HI residents at USC--some students, some faculty, some Trojan Family volunteer alums, etc. (The freshman class of 2006 has 79 from HI; 2005 had 73.) If you really want something very different from HI, you may wish to try the Midwest or East or even the Northwest.

hahah i am from hawaii originially.. i live in korea right now. sorry for all the misconceptions.
:) good luck everyone

o yeah.. and chipotledude.. i do miss the spam musubis :) and im applying to UH as well because of family and everyhting..but ill most likely end up on mainland

HiMom that was very presumptuous of you. He never stated that Hawaii was out of the country, you assumed that.

The top post of the thread reads, "I live out of country." Reading comprehension is important, qwilde. It matters in real life.

I think you'll find spoiled kids wealthy and not so wealthy at every school in the country. Some have never shared a room before and it's quite an adjustment for many. I wouldn't think it should be a deterent to going anywhere.

He never mentioned that he lived in Hawaii. His screen name may imply or suggest that, but he never explicitly stated so. Indeed, 'reading comprehension is important" HiMom. I'd prefer not to be patronized.

qwilde: "I was initially planning on applying, but an admission official was incredibly rude, so I decided not to...ruined my perception of the schoool."
qwilde: "Indeed, 'reading comprehension is important" HiMom. I'd prefer not to be patronized."

HImom was just trying to prevent a possible misunderstanding. No reason to act like a crime is in progress here, qwilde.

I'm beginning to think that your last quote explains the first quote.

To the OP: spoiled kids from souther Cal? It's a stereotype. Our D is a freshman from the east coast (any more eastern and we'd all have wet feet), and she got a scholarship, too. There's lots of OOS'ers, and they seem to be pretty good with scholarships. Good luck to you wherever you end up!

She accused the OP of something he did not do- she blatantly assumed he was implying that. Then HiMom did not have the courtesy to apologize like a mature adult. When I mentioned such an occurence I was then patronized, as an imbecile: "Reading comprehension is important, qwilde". Yet I am in the wrong?

It's a nicely split student population. To assume it's all rich, white, bolde kids would be a hasty generalization.

Yes, they do exist here...Come now...Rumor Willis and that chick from The Hills go here...

But then you have brilliant kids who are here on full merit aid or financial aid.

Everyone at USC is different, no two people are the same.
