A friend of mine went there and really seemed to like it. I know it has a nice campus but I don’t know a whole lot more about it. If I’m not mistaken that part of town is alright but like any city, it does have good and bad areas, many of which in Tampa are bad. It is in a good location though, close to downtown and Channelside which are nice. It’s close to Ybor City too which could be good or bad. Additionally its fairly close to the Westshore area or “New Tampa” which in my opinion is the best part of the city.

Gordon, that was pretty helpful. Thanks!

Can anyone else tell me more?

It is good for business, in that if you want to stay in the tampa area, there are strong connections. As you get farther from Tampa, the value of the degree deminishes quickly to having one from “any old school”.

The campus is great and if you’re from the northeast, living in Tampa is completely awesome, especially if you’re young. St. Pete is ~15 mins away…gorgeous beaches (clearwater, St. Pete, indian rocks, etc…). You can still go to a Rays game for under 20 bucks a ticket with FREE parking (I think they still do that anyway).

All in all, UT’s biggest selling point is it’s location. If somehow, you are a Florida resident and you like the area as well as the “small college feel” you can’t get from USF in Tampa then check out USF St. Petersburg Campus (Bayburrough campus). It has it’s own dorms, and the campus is breath taking- it is nestled on the edge of the Tampa Bay. If I wanted to go to school in the St. Pete area, that is where I would go-100% over the main campus in Tampa. I used to adjunct there.

I actually went to USF St. Pete and lived in the dorms. There really are a lot of benefits to going to that school. Living in downtown St. Pete was a lot of fun. It wasn’t perfect but a pretty good school. I actually applied to USF Tampa first and after touring the campus I was unimpressed. So, while I was in the area I decided to explore a bit and stumbled upon USF St. Pete. I immediately applied to transfer. IMO, USF St. Pete has the best location of any school in Florida.

tom, Thanks for the tip about USF Tampa, but we are from the northeast. Tampa does seem like a fun place to spend 4 years! Getting back to the UT, any other input? Also, what majors at UT that are outside of the business school are known for being pretty solid?

Is there a particular reason you’re interested in UT as opposed to other Florida schools? Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty good and I think tuition is relatively cheap for a private school, but Florida has some other good schools as well.

Gordon, I was just curious about it. Off hand, I can think of Eckerd and Rollins too. Rollins sounds interesting too. Eckerd is not that great for a student without a car. My son is not looking at large schools, so their out entirely.

Eckerd is alright but doesn’t seem particularly exceptional. I like Rollins. Flagler College might be worth looking into as well. They’ve got a breathtaking campus right in downtown St. Augustine.

[Flagler College](http://www.flagler.edu/)

Gordon, Flagler, or one of the other smaller schools in FLA seemed to have very religious students from what I have read. Was that Flagler, or Stetson? I just cannot remember.

Is Flagler better in some ways to U of Tampa?

Opinions from others on CC welcome too!

UT, honestly is not known as a horrible school, just not a very good one. I would say a degree is less regarded than one from USF. If you’re looking at schools in that area, there is also St. Leo, but it isn’t as good as even UT.

I lived in the Tampa/St. Pete area for 14 years and the only program I have heard of out of UT that is well thought is business. I think it has a reputation for being an “easy” school, actually- easy to get into and not that hard at all to get through. In Tampa, UT’s MBA has solid connections. Like I said, for the most part a degree from UT won’t make you stand out, but I don’t think it will be an albatross either. Being a pragmatist, I would deff. consider UT if they offered substantial non loan based aid. Again, Tampa ia awesome if you’re from the Northeast and are young.

On Wikipedia it says Flagler is nonsectarian so I’d assume it isn’t very religious, but I could be mistaken. I think Saint Leo and Palm Beach Atlantic are pretty religious schools…

Of the private schools Flagler and Rollins are the ones that just really stand out to me as a Florida resident. I’ve not visited Rollins itself but I know Winter Park is really nice. Like I said, Flagler has a really beautiful campus and it’s in downtown St. Augustine. (If you’ve never been to St. Augustine before, its a very unique city that isn’t large but full of historical charm. It’s got the Castillo de San Marcos fort, a lot of little shops and boutiques, restaurants, etc. I’ve never been anywhere else quite like it.) UT, on the other hand, has its own benefits. In academics Rollins is the best but between Flagler and UT I think it would just be personal preference.
