University of Texas at Austin Class of 2024 Admissions / Preparation

@Jennibc Thank you very much for that detailed explanation. I understand what you are saying. Honestly we knew it was a long shot being out of state, but when she got the interview request we were pleasantly surprised.

Is this week the week of the first wave of admit decision announcements? Looking at the posts in http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/2100660-university-of-texas-at-austin-class-of-2023-admissions-p18.html , it looks like many applicants got their admission notifications on the first Friday of Dec. last year.

Maybe they will, however they change it up every year so what they did the previous year may not affect this year.

I know of friends whose kids were non auto and received their 2nd choice major. Several actually. I would actually say I know more non autos that received their 2nd choice major than the first choice.

@KWimbs According to both the book “Your Ticket to the 40 Acres” and the UT admissions manager that I spoke with last month, it is RARE for that to happen. You may just know some truly extraordinary kids. There are so many non auto admits that come out of Westwood and LASA in the Austin area who are National Merit Finalists but because of the student bodies at those schools they don’t place in the top 6% and have to come in under holistic review. As the admissions person told me ‘we every now and then run across some truly outstanding holistic review students who we want to admit to the university but for some reason we cannot get them in to their first choice. In that case we look at them for second choice, but this is rare.’ If your friends have kids in high schools where having a near perfect GPA doesn’t get you in the top 6% and placement hinges on .000001 of percentile point, they are probably going to fall within being extraordinary students. Especially if they have lots of leadership and extra curricular. My son is under holistic review because he went to small alternative schools that don’t rank and that’s why I called to ask after reading “Your Ticket to the 40 Acres” where the guy said don’t count on second choice if you are holistic review.

Most likely the first wave is coming out Friday Dec. 6, however, this is for “exceptional applicants.” Meaning, not a lot come out and if you do get a decision, it’s going to be a yes. https://texadmissions.com/blog/2019/10/25/when-might-i-receive-my-major-decision-does-ut-have-rolling-admissions-for-fall-2020-freshman This link is helpful.

So far I have heard of 3 non-auto admits from my TX high school being accepted into UT (all three CNS, two of them also received Plan ll acceptances). From the research I have done, the largest wave of decisions in the past has been sent out on the last Friday in January, with those coming before that being randomly dispersed (mostly on Fridays, however). The TexAdmissions blog said that about 1/3 of all applicants will hear on the last Friday in January however. I hope that helps! I am waiting patiently but it is getting nerve-racking! Best of luck to everyone.

I feel like they will only look at your two choice, and won’t put you into any other major since they want the accepted students to enroll. MMany student won’t go there if they didn’t get into their favorite major, so by doing what you suggested, Austin would increase its acceptance rate and decrease enrollment rate, which would probably hurt their reputation and ranking.

I guess my ECs would break my application ?

Just refreshed " My status" and acceptances went out tonight!

@Jennibc are you OOS?

what major?

No, instate - not me, my kid. McCombs. But under holistic review as he’s not ranked.

@Jennibc do we get email or we have to logon to Portal.
My S20 applied to McCombs. I do not want to sound anxious and ask him to check Portal.
While I’m stressed but want to be cool so as not to influence him negatively.
Want to be mature and say it’s ok if he does not make it. All colleges are same

@Jennibc Congratulations!!!

This was very helpful! Do you know what time the decisions usually come out?

McCombs acceptance! Got the email and checked MyStatus today! Whew!

@wilmadean Congratulations! Are you in-state or Out-of-state? Please share your stats…

DD accepted by McCombs.

In state, auto admission.

For those auto admit and applied for engineering … one of my 2 sons got a response from Cockrell today for his first choice major. We are hoping to hear something for the other kid soon (his stats is a bit lower but not too much).
