rankings aren’t that big of a deal

This. But for Texas to be ranked 70th in the world, that’s still extremely great. Think how many schools there are that didn’t make it.

I’ve noticed that, living in texas, most people fail to see what a great school UT really is. These rankings prove it. Just this whole anyone in the top 10% thing is stupid and downgrades UT in the minds of most teenagers here.

International Relations major?

We don’t have International Relations at UT AFAIK.

the reason why UT’s liberal arts and some other majors aren’t highly ranked is because of the top 10% law. all those people who go to bad high schools that are in like top 7-10% end up getting stuck in liberal arts or some other majors. and of course as we all know, they shouldn’t even deserved that spot at UT in the first place.

Joe, actually almost all liberal arts majors are rated very highly, particularly compared to other public schools and to UT’s overall ranking.

Kids who are automatic admits are not even placed in Liberal Arts anymore, they are placed in Undergraduate Studies.

And who are you to say who deserves a place at UT? I think I deserve to win the lottery, but that ain’t going to make my numbers match. The fact is that the top ten law means you can’t compare UT’s admissions process to other schools–it’s a law that promotes diversity rather than kids who came from well-off backgrounds got better test prep and extracurricular opportunities.

once the top 10% rule is gone the rankings will increase to Umich/UVA levels, top 10% rule unfortunately hurts the school admission is too easy hence lower SAT scores etc.

we have a new major called International Relations and Global Studies. it is brand new, like was made a major as of 2 weeks ago. I believe they only have one class right now, but even that isn’t offered till the spring of 09. it’s like IRG something…
