University of Texas at Austin School of Law

I am a mere sophomore in high school and I have been dreaming of going to a law school since the day I was asked what career I would like to pursue. Of course, I went through the “I-Want-To-Be-A-Veterinarian” and the “I-Want-To-Be-A-Doctor” phases and wanted to truly follow my interests in law.

So, to put it straight, I want to know what people think of the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. I have good connections with the school and I want to know what life, competitiveness, and rankings are like at the school. I already know that the school is great and one of the best universities in the entire world.

I would like to here some opinions that are non-biased.

Thank you.

P.S. I know that it is a little early for me to be looking for colleges, but I am asking these questions because I want to be ahead of the game and ready for undergraduate and graduate schooling!

I do not want to be a lawyer because of the money or the fame or the power. I want to be a lawyer because I love to learn about how the world works, people’s lives, how corporations function, etc.

Sounds a little early to be fine tuning your decision on law schools since you haven’t even applied to undergrads yet and won’t for a couple more years. I recommend you revisit this topic when you have a couple years of college under your belt.

@LibreBaskerville , UT Austin Law was ranked 15th in the US, the last time I looked. For comparison, Georgetown was ranked 16th. As you already know, UT is a great school,as are the likes of Georgetown, but if you are TX in-state, the cost for Law school will be significantly less. ie $35K/yr versus $55K/y approx. That’s a big deal.Debt is a killer for new law graduates. But first things first, stay focused in H/S, get your GPA, ACT/SAT and class rank up. (UT in state undergraduate tuition is $40K/yr less than the likes of Georgetown, too) But keep your mind open to changes in your real desires. Give yourself all the options to do whatever it’s you are, or become passionate about, in the future. Good luck.

If you are looking for a merit based scholarship I would bypass UT all together, it’s a waste of time. My daughter scored a 35 on her ACT, graduated with a 4.0, auditioned and was accepted into their theatre dance program and all she was offered was 26K in loans per semester. They didn’t even waive out of state fees! Apparently the scholarship program at UT is needs based, not merit based. Admissions told me they have a holistic approach. I would love to see who was awarded scholarships based on this holistic approach!

@LibreBaskerville My DS has several friends at UT who have gone to different law schools across the nation, UT included. UT law has an excellent reputation and they do give merit money. Score high on the LSAT and build a law related resume while in undergrad. Good luck!
