University of Texas at Austin vs. NW

I've narrowed my college choice down to two options: UT and NW. I'm highly considering NW, but just wanted to know which one is better in terms of journalism; that's what I'm going for. NW has managed to make the cost of college the same as UT so that's not an issue. Just on basis of academic quality, social life, city life and surrounding area. I'm going to visit NW in about a week and I've seen pics of it; it looks beautiful, so I'm really leaning towards Northwestern. What do you guys think?

I don’t know much about Texas, but Northwestern journalism is very well-renowned. There are dozens of famous Northwestern journalist alumni, and it prepares its students very well for a variety of fields. In general academics, Northwestern has the edge. It has a great college town in Evanston and is twenty minutes or so from downtown Chicago. It is small and on the lake, with a very scenic campus. If you are not concerned about weather, and Texas journalism isn’t one of the top schools (I don’t know this or not), I’d go Northwestern.

NU’s Medill is the top undergrad journalism school in the country. NU hands down.

Northwestern, hands down.

I’m from Texas and I still say NU, especially for journalism.

I don’t think UT has a very well-known journalism department.
But since this topic is just about settled, what about (sorry to hijack the thread) UT business versus NU econ?

NU econ easy-unless you are in the Business Honors Program at UT…then it’s a toss up

I’d say NU hands down. However, what the previous poster says about Business Honors at UT is a good point…

In that case (if you are in the Business Honors program at UT), I would say base your decision on financial aid and where you want to start your career afterward. If you’re going to grad school, then I guess my second suggestion about location doesn’t yet matter. However, if you’re not going to grad school, your undergraduate location can be key in linking you to an employer right out of school.

Don’t business based grad schools also take previous work experience as a factor? Or does that only apply to an MBA?

actually i’ve been trying to decide between UT’s BHP and Northwestern for the past 10 days too~ both have great programs for business/econ. Regardless of financial factor, which one is better for future career opportunity ?
