University of Texas at Austin

What can you tell me about this school? I went on the website and it looks really good, but 50,000 kid? Is that overwhelming? Has anybody visted? Whats it like? I am perticuraly intrested in the undergrad business program?

Is the school similar to other large state Universitys, like Arizona State or Indiana? How hard is admission, I am from out of state? I know that the honors program is extremly difficult to get into but what about the regular program? How are the clases, are they all over 100 kids--lecture or do they have some smaller classes once you start to specialize?

Also, when applying for jobs or grad school does is it very difficult and competative because there is just so many kids?

Other schools that I am looking at--GWU, BU, UMich, USC, Georgetown
Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

Getting into the business school is extremely hard. S is in-state with strong stats and he is not counting on getting into the business school.
The university is huge. Austin is a fun city and there is a lot to do, including some neat outdoor activities. People who attend the university love it, and are big supporters of the football and basketball teams.

Yeah if you are OOS admission is EXTREMELY competitive. UT is in line with your other choices, in my opinion. I for one do not feel overwhelmed by the size but you just have to visit and SIT IN ON A CLASS. If you can get in, its rather cheap for a public OOS school and definitely one of the best buys in higher education.

corporatelaw637 where are you from? i'm also out of state (mass), debating whether to apply here (i would just do it but because of the separate app and 2 essays w/ weird questions (neither of which i can use the essay i already wrote for), i'm not going to waste my time unless i really love it. haven't visited but i've heard very good things about austin. the reason i might NOT apply is because its like 95% or more texas residents, which makes me wonder if i'd feel kind of out of place or like more people would already know each other/be from the same places.

I'm visiting on Wednesday. I've lived in TX my whole life, but never been to Austin. If you can get in OOS, you can probably get into the honors programs.

I am from Arizona. I havent visted and probably wont be able to before its time to apply.

So more specifially for the business program are all the clases really huge lectures? Yea, I was kinda wondering about being one of the only people not from texas too....

There are plenty of people from outside Texas. Besides that, Texas is a huge, diverse state. The first year classes are pretty big. I'm not sure how it works if you are in business honors.

I've heard about its Plan II honors program, which is supposedly a major in itself. How does that work? If you do Plan II, you don't get to pursue engineering?

Most people in Plan II double major, so yours could very well be Engineering.

The Business school has about 4,000 students in it, the size of some small universities. Core classes will be large (with the rest of UT) but the general business classes prolly only have 30-50 students.

If you apply to Plan II and don't get in, can you still be admitted to the regularly school?

yes - the good thing about Plan II is that they don't have to follow the top 10% rule and can admit applicants based on their merit rather than class rank

if you are interested in plan II i suggest you look at the required core honors classes...i wanted to be in "an honors program" but after reading the classes I had to take my interest waned
