University of Texas--Austin Admissions

@lilterio28‌ wait so was this a formal rejection? Like you went to the mystatus page and it said no to your 1st choice?

No it was in an email, but this is honors, so the admission people at UT who decide major decisions do not review honors. I still have a shot at regular Mccombs, which is what i wanted to do

@lilterio28‌ did you get the rejection email after you interviewed or did you not make it to the interview phase?

Really disturbing news out of Austin today re: improper influence in the admission process. Waiting to see the Kroll report, but it doesn’t sound good. I didn’t want to believe it. Pretty damn discouraging for those of us hoping to get in on merit. I am still waiting for news on my own application (1st choice CS, 2nd choice math), but don’t have a daddy in the lege to help me out.

I got to the interview phase. The phone interviews are almost a joke, they ask the most basic questions that you already had in your resume

@lilterio28‌ at least you got to the interview. My DS was rejected prior to interview phase with the following stats:

ACT 33
SAT 2100 (1440 cr + math)
National merit commended
AP scholar
400+ hours comm svc
Two varsity sports 3 yrs)
Competitive sport 3 years
Jobs and internship
School doesn’t rank

@austinwannabe where did you hear this?

The re: improper influence in the admission process came up years ago. Google it and you will see a report is due out today from Kroll Associates with the findings. IMHO it doesn’t change anything for those who do not have Legislators writing recommendation letters for admission.

@MOMOF5TX, check out the dallas morning news web site, front page. Maybe it doesn’t have much practical impact on the rest of us, but it feels really discouraging to think of someone taking my place who didn’t earn it.

I hope we both get in to regular mccombs!!! That’s all I hoping for. If anyone wants to judge my stats and tell me my chance please do!!

It would be very brazen to continue to have “holds” (per the Dallas news article - Powers’ admissions that lack the gpa and test results) while an investigation is underway. So unlikely to impact the admission pool this year. The article said it was 300 "holds’ per year.

Hi,
Does anyone here have any knowledge about he average stats for the Deans/ Turing scholars program at UT Austin ?

Thanks

@lilterio28‌ I’m waiting to get into regular McCombs or UGS as well.
2120 SAT (SS)
31 ACT
3.5 UW GPA
100/716 class rank (enter generic “I go to a competitive school” quote here)
13 AP classes/2 Dual Credit classes
AP Scholar with Honors
National Merit Commended
~250 hours of community service
Part time job for the last two years at a local non-profit
Summer internships at a local accounting/finance firm

UT says they have a holistic review process where GPA and test scores are just pieces of the overall pie. There can be argument in the importance of dedication and passion for an activity, community service, etc. in the overall makeup of a college community that is broad and diverse. I personally believe that a holistic review is best. Our kids are more than a GPA or test score, and I believe being well-rounded beyond the classroom prepares kids for the real world. I do believe that the TX legislature will eventually lower the percent required for in-state admission. Other schools have recognized the importance of OOS kids on the diversity of a campus, as well as the financial impact of kids who are paying significantly more than in-state kids–more money for facilities, scholarships, research, etc.

Hey guys when our admission decision is made, will we get an email telling us to check our MyStatus?

Anyone know when Moody will come out? My S is OOS.

@jenie11 UT is in in a fortunate position that is has an endowment in the same class as Princeton, Yale, Stanford. It has to support a much larger number of students.

So I actually read the entire Kroll report that was released today re: favortism in UT’s admission process. I’m not saying it’s good, but it’s a lot more benign than the news reports implied. FWIW.
