Can someone tell about how Orientation works? Like, when can we sign up? Are there certain dates specific to majors? Do parents attend separate sessions? (I have a Class of 2023 Aggie so any comparisons to how TAMU does it is helpful.)

Does anyone have a list of dorms that have a sink in the room? From my research, I have found Andrews and Carothers are the only ones with sinks but I’m hoping I missed a few. My son would be happy to stay in Andrews or Carothers but that may depend on if he gets into Honors since those are in the Honors Quad. He isn’t interested in the Jesters or San Jacinto as those seem way too extroverted and lively for him. He wants a quiet, studious setting without a lot of college crazy going on around him.

I lived in Jester back in the day  I assume it has changed a bit.

Thanks for creating this post @ChillyCow We are considering whether to do Callaway House or on campus dorm. Does anyone have experience with either.

Anybody know when the results of the engineering honors program will be released after you have been admitted. My D got into ECE dept. as an OOS student a few days ago.

Also, any recommendation on what is the best dorm for a female engineering student?

Last year it was remote who knows about this year. Usually you sign up in April. It’s not major specific but you do meet within groups in your college and there are some dates that some schools don’t meet but like Mccombs is every session if I recall. Also, parents definitely come and it is awesome. Between my husband and me we have been through 5 different school orientations and UT ny far was the best. There is one big all group thing but otherwise the rest is pretty much separate with things for the parents to go to by interest.

My daughter lived in a private dorm so I can’t comment on engineering dorms but there is one that I think is closer to engineering that people do tend to recommend.

My daughter lived in Callaway. Feel free to pm me about it. If my son applied to UT this year and went, I would pay him NOT to live there

Jester is still pretty popular and where they house students during orientation. Honors students (at least CBHP) as my daughter learned got the nicest rooms during orientation. That was a nice bonus.

Hi - I think I pm messaged you, not sure how this forum works My email is smclendon429@gmail.com if that is easier for you.

Why would you not want your son living in Callaway? What other options would you recommend?

Thanks. Also, do we even get a choice of picking the dorm or does UT pick for us? I keep hearing that dorms are not guaranteed for all (even for freshmen) due to the short supply of dorms.

On campus is not guaranteed as there are more students than beds available. I believe there’s like a $50 non refundable deposit that puts you in line for housing and that’s how you select your room so yeah it’s not that you just get to pick since many dorms might fill up first and some people pay the $50 as soon as they apply in August. You may want to ask those questions on the main cc class of 2025 page because many are in state people who have kid after kid attend.

For newbies you can’t even join the parent fb group until it’s too late to get info after current students graduate which stinks and you have to join the parent association but it is worth it.

Yes, I am not sure how/if you get your dorm choice. I lived in Jester in 1981 and it’s pretty old, as are many of the dorms. Jester had a sink in the room, I am not sure about other dorms that might.

I do think they recently redid Jester, but not 100% sure.

@ChillyCow- you are correct in the fact that A & C are the 2 dorms in the quad with sinks. (My DS was in Carothers for 2 years & made life-long friends!) Another dorm to consider if Honors is not an option might be Duren. Everything I have read is that it is not as busy/loud as Jester or San Jac.

Good luck on Honors.

Engineering is at the north side, Jester is at the south, although it is a short walk, if you have to run from Jester in the morning to the engineering buildings (along the crowded speedway from 21st to 26th or E Dean Keeton) during the hot August and September it is not fun. Jester are closer to McCombs.

@svk007 I read on the website that notifications go out from January-March. What state are y’all from?

Engineering freshmen are not going to take too many classes in Engineering. So I don’t think is necessary to stay in the northside. Jester may still be ok, at least for the first year.
