Hey, guys. Okay I have been looking into UT Austin's website lately and I saw that they have a dual-degree program for Architecture/Architectural Engineering. As of right now, I am completely confused. What exactly is a dual-degree program? I know it will take 5 to 6 years to complete, but I am completely lost on what it is! Is treated like a single major like any other degree? If so, can you do this program AND still double major in something else (like Theatre). Insight is much needed and appreciated.

Do you have excellent stats? Are you in-state or out-of-state? Either way, ArchE is THE most selective department of the engineering school at UT.

Arch/ArchE is an incredibly challenging route to pursue. If you succeed, you’ll have degrees in architecture and engineering when you finish. I was an ArchE student (many moons ago, but my dad is still an ArchE prof). I had ONE friend who was a dual major - it was very hard for him, and he was brilliant. Arch. and engineering are SO different - you have to have an analytical mind for Eng. and an artistic mind for Arch. To give you an idea - I was an excellent engineering student, but really struggled in the two architectural design classes I had to take. I got a C one semester! I still graduated with a 3.8+ GPA, so you can tell that the C was very unusual.

It’s hard enough for me to imagine someone tackling the Arch/ArchE program. I think it would be impossible to major in something else, also, unless you plan on spending a lot of years in college. And what would be the point? To be frank, I don’t think the dual Arch/ArchE program gives you an advantage in getting a job. Employers are looking for either an architect or an engineer. Decide which field is for you and stick with it.

Bump…?

Um, you’re welcome??

Oh sorry MaineLonghorn thanks so much for the insight!
