University of Texas - Austin

Is it true that it is basically impossible to get accepted to UT, especially McCombs, from out-of-state even if one has 3.8+ GPA and such?

3.8 GPA with what kind of courseload? I’ve seen transfers get rejected with 4.0s because they took some pretty low-rigor courses to fluff up their GPA, so as long as you’re taking as many challenging courses as you can (honors, etc.) you should be in a position to be competitive.

McCombs is ridiculously hard to get in to these days, even for TX residents, and since they get preference it makes it even harder for OOS and international.

Here are some stats on external transfer admissions (click the external transfers tab and scroll to the bottom):

http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/bba/admission/

I have to say as an OOS it looks beyond difficult - in 2008, 116 applied and only 8 were admitted.

Just for some background, McCombs only takes transfers in the fall, so while you don’t get compared to the incoming freshman applicants, they do have an impact on your chances. (Our pesky 10% law is partially to blame for this.) As it stands, they start admitting the top 1% ranked of freshman, then move on to 2%, 3%, etc. until the number of admitted students accounts for 75% of the incoming fall McCombs class (usually about 900 students). The remaining 25% of spots (about 300) are then filled with other qualified applicants on a more holistic approach, including OOS and international freshman and transfers.

Depending on how many units you have as a transfer, you could always try for a less competitive major or even general studies and then apply to McCombs as an internal transfer.
