Your thoughts on this university please..
Hoping to hear from different posters.

Hey teal-

I've lived in Stockton my whole life (minus the time I'm away to school). I have to admit that I love Stockton. I also have to admit that not everyone feels this way. My friends also love Stockton, but I know of many who don't like it (although many lovingly hate it). Stockton isn't always the most fun place, but they are working really hard right now to revamp downtown. We have all the basics (shopping, movies, bowling, etc), and a venue downtown that a lot of comedians (Seinfeld, Cosby) as well as some bands come. We also have a nice outside venue that puts on a lot of concerts. We have a minor league baseball team (with a soon-to-be-open waterfront park), and a minor league soccer team coming soon. It's always easy to go to Sacramento or San Francisco.

I just realized that you asked about the school, and I talked about Stockton. This is due to that fact that the main thing that keeps people from UOP would probably be Stockton. The campus itself is absolutely gorgeous (the prettiest I've seen, probably). I wanted to go there forever, until I realized that it was about two minutes from my home. :) Its pharmacy and music departments are the most well-known, and are very respected. The basketball team just went to the college basketball playoffs. I think there is a growing school spirit.

If you have any specific questions, I can try to answer them.

How is Pacific for Engineering, and do you know anything about their Honors Program?

I can only give you some info from whatever I have experienced with so far.

I applied because they sent me a lot of info on the School of International Studies, and it sounded like a good program (although their video quality wasn't that great), admissions isn't too tough, plus the application online is free. I got accepted with a Regents scholarship ($10,000 if i remember correctly) plus they added on more grants later on to try to attract me there, and I remembered they had current students who would call me and give me info about UOP and answer any of the questions that I had. They were really nice and really wanted to recruit more students to their campus, it seemed.

But that's as far as my personal experience goes with it. My friends who are interested in dentistry talk about UOP often... one person I know who could have gone into far more prestigious universities decided to choose UOP just for the dentistry program. (I hear it's pharmacy program is good too). I saw a couple pictures that he posted up online, and the campus looks nice. I'm also aware that they have a good college basketball program, which was a plus for me... but it also lacks the diversity that is a strong point for many of the bigger California universities.

UOP is not the most respected college, admissions standards are pretty low. Stockton not the most diserable location. For a dental program that's easy to get into it is the choice of some.

I applied there as a Safety School for Engineering, although I had mainly heard about it for Pharmacy and Dental, like you say. But their 5 year Eng program with a year of work experience stuck in there seems like a good way to make contacts for a future job. They have offered me that $10,000 Regents scholarship + more, and admission into their Honors Program, and students have also been calling me. I have to say it feels good to be wanted, and my parents are saying I need to at least go look at the campus, but I feel that I can do better, and don't even want to bother. That is why I am also searching for opinions about UOP, because some of my friends have said it is a really good school ? but they are not academic achievers and probably do not know what they are talking about. At least not for Eng. Thanks.

Premier13, i'm glad that you are also considering teh school. I like how the school is keeping in touch w/ me and sending me piles of stuff. Are you coming to honors day or profile day?

Since UOP doesn't have a separate forum or many related posts, I thought i'd start one, aiming to hear from prospective students, locals, students, etc.

It's been difficult to get a complete opinion as Stockton is always mentioned, while the school itself is neglected from the discussion. Lol i understand why it may be so, but Hopefully, I get to learn more about UOP. This thread is a start :)

uschicka, what made you consider the school as one of your choices? do you know anything about the honors program? how is the student body like?

i believe the dental program is in san francisco, the rest of the college is in stockton. UOP has a bit of respect around cali, but the only thing is, its in stockton, and really, there is nothing else in stockton. I wouldn't recommend it. but then again, they do have a pretty campus, a great d-1 basketball team, a decent amount of respect and i guess its close enough to san francisco that it wouldnt be a total drag.

Yep, teal, moving away from the pharmacy thread and since the last time I posted there, I've heard negative things about Stockton as well. A very good friend of mine with very close relations to the area has told me "I don't know why you're even thinkin' 'bout' goin' there. I have family there, it's dry, there's nothing to do, and it's not a very desirable area." Take note, please, that this is her opinion and is not meant to offend anybody, especially me, for applying to a school located there.

Our human anatomy teacher @ school, I'll call him Dr. G because he is also a practicing chiropractor, was a Tiger alumni for 3 years. Then he left for SDSU for his senior year. So my initial reaction was "What the [fudge]?"

His response? "The weather. I was born in southern California so I missed the weather. And I was a junior, so I wanted to be more active. I was cooped up in that campus for 3 years. The nightlife in the city, too, isn't verrry safe. And people talk about oversized classes in state schools, but they're forgetting that their information is based on freshman and sophomore year. I went to a state school and my first day of my first class, there were only 15 students in the room. The class size becomes smaller as students become more focused and concentrated on their major."

Dr. G still went on to become a doctor after coming from SDSU. Most importantly, he emphasized that even with the small ratio of teacher-student interaction in UoP, students are still going to have to make the effort to visit professors during office hours. He had to do that when he was still in UoP, which was to his advantage because his professors ended up writing very good recommendation letters for him.

Any additional input about UoP would be helpful, too. But Dr. G's comments and objective input was a lot of food for thought. At least, for me. I've already taken into consideration that times have changed and student populations have ballooned since his time, but I'm very still glad he got in his nickel's worth on the issue. The financial aid was very lucrative for me and I'm flattered with all of the attention I'm getting from them, too. But I still have options I need to consider before committing myself to UoP.

UoP's more well-known for their impressive Pharm and Dentistry programs, premier13. My friend was so bummed when she got rejected from the Pre-Dentistry program.

As for Admit Day, theirs clashed with UCSD's, so I'm heading south on the 8th and freshen up for the 9th. Yes...!

Hello there

I got accepted the the pre-dentistry program at UoP. I have been given the opportunity to choose between the 5, 6 or 7 year accelerated dental program. Is there anyone around who is currently enrolled in this program? I would appreciate opinions on what option is the best (the 5, 6 or 7 years?). I do understand that the 5 year program does not get you a BA degree. However does this really matter once you get your DDS?

Thanks!

You're into UCSD? Don't even consider UOP, the student population is light years from SDs, and your fellow students are a huge part of the college experience.

teal, I actually never seriously considered going to UOP when applying to schools. Growing up, seeing the gorgeous campus, I wanted to go there, not really thinking what that meant. As I grew older, I knew that I didn't want to be that close to home (seriously like a two minute drive). If it was in a different city, I would have considered it a lot more.

I don't know much about the student body as a whole. I have a lot of friends there, and they're all great (and smart) people. :) If from nowhere else, you're going to get a lot of smart Stockton kids at UOP, because a lot of us stay in Stockton to go there. I've also been to some awesome parties there, if that counts for anything.

As for the weather, I have to say at times I like it better than Southern California weather (at times). During the winter, yes, it does get into the 40s sometimes, and it rains, but that's about it. We have a beautiful fall, and the summers are stifling (for people who like that).

When I went on a California college tour I visited Berkeley, Stanford, various other UC's, U of Pacific, etc. University of the Pacific was definitely the nicest campus besides Stanford.

zagat - UCSD? Yes. Do the parents know? No. Yeah, I know. Yikes.

The campus visits are just formalities for me, really. I think they know in their gut that they're going to "lose" me to UCSD, but I like thinking that I'm giving them an excuse to visit our SoCal relatives more often because I'll be going there.

BUT! That's for the UCSD thread. The focus here is UoP and King, I've heard wonderful praises about the UoP campus. I'm looking forward to seeing what you saw when you hit UoP. If we're talking about architectural designs of buildings, I'm definitely more into modern architecture than I am about quaint buildings and other such structures. I'm not a strong math student, but I definitely appreciate the art produced by math. :)

I'm a high school senior that lives in southern california and i visited UoP for Profile day because i was admitted into their pre-pharm program. I was pretty impressed. The campus was very nice and the health-sciences building is very new. The area around seemed pretty nice too. The only reason im not going is because i got into the pre-pharm program at USC.

U of Pacific is perhaps the prettiest campus in California, bar Stanford
