My parents mentioned to me today that they want me to also apply to the University of Toronto.

I have looked at the website, and have found little to no information on the school. From what I can tell, all I need to do is send in a transcript and my SAT/ACT scores, and then they decide. No essays. No letters of rec. Nothing more than that.

Have I been totally mislead? Do Canadians really go through THAT much simpler of an application process? Because I don't know what to do, or how good the school is, or if I have any chance at getting in (33 ACT, 3.8 or so unweighted GPA), I'm not sure if I want to bother applying at this point. It does seem, though, that the deadline is March 1st...so it's possible I guess.

I guess what I'm asking is this: Can anybody here give me the lowdown on UT's admissions/application process?

You'd probably get accepted. Canadian schools, like most of the world's colleges, are much simpler to apply to than colleges in the US. U of Toronto is a very highly regarded school, and the city of Toronto is very interesting and relatively safe...though it gets a bit chilly in the winter. Go for a visit, and I think you'll be very impressed

That's what's so great about Canadian universities. Send in your basics. In your case, wait for that very likely acceptance. Say hello to a relatively cheap, highly regarded university, just in case you don't get into your top choice.

And Canada is fantastic.

I was close to applying to a couple of Canadian Universities, but I was confused about the applications too, so I didn't apply.

If you have questions about the application process, call the admissions office.

I agree the site takes a lot of digging around. Here is what I found. Go to

http://www.utoronto.ca/Prospective_Students.htm

and click on 2007-2008 viewbook on the right hand side under direct links..click on page 18-21 and you'll see the admissions requirements etc. Below is a copy and paste. It also depends on what major you are applying for...when I looked over the site (which took days) for my D last year I found they required 3 Sat subject tests also which is not mentioned here.

Applicants from American Secondary Schools (in the USA and other countries): The Faculty of Arts and Science St. George campus, University of Toronto Mississauga, University of Toronto Scarborough, the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Physical Education and Health/Kinesiology will consider applications from students who have completed or who are completing 12th Grade in an accredited high school.
In addition to having achieved a high grade point average throughout high school, applicants must present high scores in SAT Reasoning or ACT examinations including the Writing Test component and at least three SAT Subject Tests or AP/IB subjects appropriate to their proposed area of study. Scores below 500 in any part of the SAT Reasoning or SAT Subject Tests are not acceptable. Students in the past have presented scores of at least 600 in each SAT component and 26 on the ACT. Many programs require higher scores.

Students seeking admission to science or business/commerce programs are strongly advised to complete AP Calculus (AB or BC) or IB Mathematics (HL or SL or Math Methods with Calculus option).

Most select Canadian schools require good SAT's and gpa. Mcgill required 2 subject tests but Queens did not. None of them require essays.

How do they look at senior year grades?

With further digging I found the following for U Toronto...

You must provide all necessary documents by April 30. We require a complete transcript, Grades 9 through 11, that also includes mid-term Grade 12 results. We also require SAT Reasoning/ACT scores (including the Writing Test component) and at least three SAT Subject Test/AP scores. The transcript or an accompanying school profile should include reference to the school?s accreditation and grading scale. Please see the appropriate program information section for deadlines.

Decisions will be made based on mid-term Grade 12 results and available SAT/ACT/AP scores. An offer of admission will be conditional. If you do not qualify on the basis of your mid-term results, it is unlikely that we will be able to reassess your application when final grades are received.
