University of Toronto - Does anyone have any info about admissions?

It seems impossible to find any concrete information about admissions statistics or difficulty for University of Toronto. All I can find is old forum posts that aren't really helpful.

Does anyone have any info regarding admissions to U of T, how competitive it is, etc??

I'd like to get an idea of what my chances are, but there's no info out there to help me.

Some people are saying Canadian schools aren't competitive at all and accept just about anyone, yet, that they are excellent schools, so I feel that can't be trusted.

U of T is a top 20 university in the world according to all of the rankings I have seen. Newsweek did a ranking of all non-US schools and ranked them 3rd behind Cambridge and Oxford. With respect to admission - much depends on the program and the campus. The downtown campus (St. George) is the largest of the 3 campuses and is generally more competitive than Mississauga or Scarborough. For undergrads the two programs that are most difficult to get into are Engineering Science and Rotman Commerce. You might sneak into those programs with high 80’s. I think Rotman Commerce might have a slightly lower admission average (just a % or two). Anything else you are interested in studying goes down from there in terms of average.

No schools in Canada are Ivy league competitive but the top schools in Canada (Toronto, McGill, UBC, Queen’s etc.) are comparable in admission difficulty to the top state schools in the US (Michigan, UNC Chapel Hill, UCLA etc.)

Here are the minimum cutoffs for admission to McGill for an American applicant. The cutoffs for Toronto are a bit lower but certainly not low:

Thank you for the information guys!

My SAT I is 1900 (CR:660 M:520 W:720), SAT II Literature:660 French:800
So from what I see for McGill, I fit right in and above, except for Math.

Regarding grades and GPA i’m not too sure what to expect though. I have quite a peculiar story and situation, I came to the USA after living in France since I was 7 years old. And i’m going to major in French Language or French Studies most likely.

Would that major be competitive for me?

Canadian universities do not take a holistic view in admissions, it is strictly by the numbers. They generally do not look at EC’s, references or essays. There are no hooks either. In general, you either meet all the minimum requirements or you are not admitted. Just meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission of course.

For McGill Arts, 650 in each section of the SAT is the minimum are they are not flexible.

I’m not applying at McGill though.

So University of Toronto would see that I have a lower GPA, see that my 9th and 10th grade years were in France, and not try to understand what happened, and simply reject me because I do not meet the requirements, ignoring anything else I could possibly bring to the school?

Use this to see if you’re eligible for admissions at U of T: Admissions[/url”>http://www.adm.utoronto.ca/adm-awards/admissions.action]Admissions

Yes, I used that link before. It didn’t really tell me anything about admissions other than they want SAT scores, and that if I want to major in French I need to have taken French classes, which I obviously already knew.

I guess I might have to call them to understand how they evaluate their applications, and if they would automatically reject me.

You’re being very pessimistic, Nina. From what I heard when I was attending an English program at U of T, it’s not very selective. Their selection rate is about 80% of those who apply. St. Georges is more selective–about 60% (an approximate). If you have a GPA that’s in the high eighties, you’ll probably get in. You’re really underestimating yourself. I’ll call this phenomenon" the CC effect". Raise your SAT math score, and I’d say you’ll get in.

Here’s an estimate: <a href=“University of Toronto Admissions Statistics and Chances | Parchment - College admissions predictions.”>University of Toronto Admissions Statistics and Chances | Parchment - College admissions predictions.;

More: Admission[/url”>http://www.utoronto.ca/about-uoft/measuring-our-performance/cudo/cudo_2008/Admission.htm]Admission

McGill, by far the most selective university in Canada, has an acceptance rate of 47%, by the way.

I’m not quite sure what a GPA in the high eighties would be, my school doesn’t have that system. But in all cases my GPA is far too low for me to have a chance at being accepted (cumulative of my 9th-12th grades is a weighted 2.91). (My junior year GPA is a weighted 4.1 though, and senior year is looking the same)

I sort of got my hopes up when I saw their high acceptance rate, but i’m thinking I shouldn’t rely on that, the students who apply must all have better academics than I do.
And the issue with the SAT is that I already took it approx 4/5 times, and the math just doesn’t get any higher, even with math tutoring…so I gave up.

Did you manage to get into U of T?

Hey!
I’m looking for PhD in English. Anyone has any stats about the number of students applying vs the number of students accepted for U of T, McGill, U of Alberta, McMaster University?
I scored a 66% in my Bachelor’s and a 63% in my Master’s from University of Delhi. What are my chances of getting in?
