Hello guys, I am an IB student from Taiwan and currently looking forward to applying U of T Chemical Engineering. My current IB score is…
Chinese A SL 6/7
English B HL 6/7
Business Management HL 6/7
Mathematics SL 7/7
Chemistry HL 7/7
Spanish ab intio 6/7
and + 2 predicted grade
(I’ll take Tofel in July to satisfy the language requirement of UT)
Although my predicted IB score is higher than average U of T IB grade (About 34-36); I’ve heard that Engineering in U of C is really competitive. A lot of people takes math HL or AP calculus to get in and yet I’m only math SL…
The time that I find out U of T “prefer” IB math HL or AP calculus is too late. I cannot change my class and there is no time for me to sign up AP exam in may.
Hence I want to ask
- Do you guys know anyways (i.e. test, exam) that can complement my
Competitiveness in math.
- Will sat 2 subject math test works for U of T?
- Do you guys think I have a chance to get in U of T?
- If anyone of you has applied U of T as an IB student before and willing to share your experience, I will appreciate it indeed.
Best Regards
Hi Angelo! Happy to find someone here from Taiwan. I’m also Taiwanese but currently living in China.
I’m also an IB student, but I applied for the Life Sciences (Biochemistry) instead of engineering at St. George’s Woodsworth College, which I got accepted to. I’m a senior in high school now btw.
I take Math SL as well, but I don’t think it factors in for life sciences as much as engineering. I’d say that handing in your SAT subject test for Math would definitely give your application a boost. And also make sure that you submit your application as early as possible since it’s a rolling admissions, places fill up quickly!
If you’re still concerned about competitiveness, another thing might be to not apply to Trinity College, which is definitely the most competitive for sciences. Personally, I picked Woodsworth since I like the dorms haha.
But overall, I think you have pretty high chance of getting in. I’m almost taking the same subjects as you (Chem HL-7, Bio HL-6, Math SL-6, Chinese B HL-7, English A SL- 6, History SL-6 with 3 bonus points), so hopefully for Engineering that should be good as well.
Best of luck to you!
I truly appreciate you, Thank you really much! - Angelo

The math requirements for international IB students is here - http://discover.engineering.utoronto.ca/admission-requirements/international-applicants/international-baccalaureate/ Note that they say they’ll accept SL, but prefer HL. To me, this means that you should work towards getting a 7 in SL, which I see you’re already predicted, so you’re fine. SAT2 scores can help too.
For engineering, the most important grades will be math, English, physics and chemistry. I don’t see physics on your list of courses. It’s a required course. They won’t admit you without it. Are you taking it? Can you add it?
