I have heard U of T reviews that are either 5 stars or 1 star, no in between. I toured it, met with a proffessor, and loved it, but a few of the reviews I have read have begun to worry me. U of T students, please honestly evaluate the school in terms of EDUCATION and administration, I don’t care about the social aspect of the school. Please specify whether or not you felt like a student or more a number as well, because this is a common complaint I’ve come across. Thank you so much!!
I attended UofT (and left with two degrees). I enjoyed it and did not feel like a number. I think that your program choice makes a difference. The college system also helps make the St. George campus more manageable, psychologically and physically (i.e., if you live on campus, in the dorms–which is what I did, and what I’d suggest, to become a real part of the community and make friends easily and naturally)–with Victoria, UC, Trinity and St. Mike’s being all good choices (I don’t know too much about some of the others). Let your own direct assessment be your guide, I would suggest.
Three of my daughters attended U of T for undergrad, and stayed on for law school, med school, and grad school respectively. They all enjoyed their undergrad experience and had no desire to go elsewhere afterwards. They all got a great education. I’m never sure what people actually mean by ‘feeling like a number’. U of T is a large university, it is never going to feel the same as going to, for instance, Bishops in Quebec. You find your friends and your niche in your college, usually, at U of T and college choice is important, in my opinion.
Well, as an undergraduate student, I do not recommend UOFT as a good school ( not sure about graduate school). The reason is first of all the classes are super big which makes you distracted alot. plus, it makes professors and TAs super busy that they tend not care about your concerns ( I even seen TAs that randomly mark assignments without reading the actual thing and try to make an avarage mark for the whole class).Second, I have got emials from professors that they avaraged down the class. This will tend to make your marks lower compare to other schools. I had classmate that have got a GPA of 4 and transferred to uoft second year and got 2.9. My confidence is a lot lower than before and in some points of my life I felt so disappointed at my self. I managed to improve myself and leave from those emotions, however I have seen lots of people that stayed there and failed. I recomend Uoft for someone who is either a super genius individual ( over 95 in highschool with minimum effort ).
Toronto is not for students who need individual attention. If you an independent student you will thrive there. If you need hand you will likely fail.
IT is important to belong to a College–that will be your community. My years at UofT were the best of my life.
not recommended for a pre-professional pathway as there is significant grade deflation which will destroy your chance of entering your graduate school of choice.
@moneyp That is not going to be the case with everyone at U of T. Three of my Ds attended U of T for undergrad and all three got into their desired programs post-grad. They are not unique.
Some students struggle at U of T but that is certainly not the case for most.
@alwaysamom @moneyp Our family has had the same experience as alwaysamom. So far, 3 undergrads at U of T, one U of T PhD, one U of T MD and one senior at U of T who has the grades and LSAT score for a top US or Canadian law school.
Not every school is right for every student. If you like being challenged, you will like U of T. If you want someone to hold your hand, it is not the place for you.
