University of Utah Class of 2024

@2020MomTwins
Great for you! That is really exciting. We have not seen anything. Did the news come via personal email or did your son find it on the Utah portal?

@2020MomTwins - Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing this information! Unfortunately we did not receive an email, but it is good to know that the interview invitations have been sent. Best of luck to your son!

It was communicated through Utah email.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if there still might be a glitch in the Utah email as the Honors College decisions were supposed to be communicated through internal Utah email and many students, including mine, didn’t ever get this notification via email. I guess I may just trying to remain optimistic.

@JD7777 I hate to say it, but I’m guessing those of us who haven’t heard at this point were not selected to interview for Eccles. I had high hopes for Utah for my D20 but I guess it isn’t meant to be. Luckily for her she was admitted early to her 1st choice school and interviewed for a scholarship this weekend so hoping that one works out!!!

@KBTDPT Yes, unfortunately I think you are correct. I tried to get confirmation Friday via phone and email but wasn’t successful. I will try again this afternoon. Good luck to your daughter and hopefully the interview went great!

@JD7777 Please let us know what you find out! I was hoping that they would notify ppl whether they were invited to interview or not. I also sent an email today to inquire and will report back when I hear something.

Nothing to report yet. I called and was forwarded to the Honors College where a student answered and directed me to a number of a person who was away. I left a message. Sounds like they are working this week (Spring Break for the students.)

I received an email back today stating “please refer to the website for dates” and that they were still contacting students about possible interviews for Eccles. She did not answer my question about whether students who don’t receive an interview invite will hear either way.

Sorry, “early March” to me means the first week…So I went ahead and coughed up the $130 for housing today…

Interesting. The timeline says that decisions will go out by end of March but that students selected to interview will hear in early March. Like you I think early March would mean before today. Thanks for the update.

I heard back the exact same message as above.

Congrats to all who have been accepted! My S20 (OOS from California) was offered in-state tuition from the Business Scholars Program as well as WUE.
He is considering both, as well as other schools - basically it has come down to SDSU Honors, Utah, or possibly a UC, depending on where he gets in. He loves snowboarding and is really excited about the Lassonde dorms at Utah, and is familiar with the area because he’s been boarding there a number of times over the years. We also have a friend whose son goes to the U and has had a great experience with the ease of dealing with the school, compared to UCs in California.

Anyway, we are thinking that the Business Scholars option is better financially (despite it only being one year and having a higher GPA requirement than WUE) because it sounds like most OOS students get in-state tuition after their first year if they stay there in the summer and become Utah residents. Time spent on WUE does not count toward residency.

Maybe there is something I am missing, but, even for people who don’t have tuition-lowering first year scholarships, WUE all 4 years vs one year OOS and 3 years at the in-state rate seem close to a wash over 4 years, without having to worry about WUE GPA requirements.

Yes this is correct, the total is pretty much the same even without scholarships (and if you might go over 4 years then getting in-state tuition is much, much better, because the WUE scholarship is limited to 8 semesters). Most people we know who chose WUE were worried about their kid feeling lonely and sad if they aren’t able to come home for the summer. But the reality is that so many people stay that it’s a fun experience, especially if you take a lighter than normal class load (you only need to take one class to get on campus housing), and have the opportunity to go away at weekends.

Because Utah charges by the credit hour but the summer is always charged at in-state rates, the financially optimal solution could be to take a lighter than normal class load (12 units minimum) in fall and spring of the first year when you are charged OOS rates and then make it up in the summer. Alternatively because there is a full semester’s worth of lower division and general ed courses available in many subjects, you can use those summer classes to help graduate early.

I was able to get confirmation today that our son was not selected for the finalist group for the Eccles Scholarship. The response we are all getting about “refer to the timeline” is, in my opinion, an effort to keep the anxious parents at bay. Of course I can’t say anything for sure but I appreciated finally getting the news.

@JD7777 glad you can move on with life! If I remember correctly your son still has full tuition x 4 years which is still awesome!

I wish they would notify all of interview or not rather than waiting until March 31 to let those not being interviewed know. How did you get confirmation? @JD7777 As of yesterday I also figured that my son was not getting an interview.

I called again and was routed to one of the Deans or Assistant Deans in the Honors College. Very kind person and although the news was disappointing, I appreciated knowing. It is uncharted waters for colleges right now moving to virtual learning and cancelling so much. I appreciated that the person I spoke with had 5 minutes for my questions as they are not really that important on a big scale.

@JD7777 thanks for letting me know. Best of luck to your family in this college decision season!

Our son is a junior this year, so a year behind most on this thread. He wants to get a CS major and EAE minor. We were set to visit the U this week for spring break, but obviously, we canceled our plans. Our son has a 3.78 UW GPA, if his practice tests hold true to form will get somewhere between a 29-32 on the ACT, and we are Texas residents. That should provide some merit aid but not any of the upper-level scholarships. I know they encourage students to spend the summer in UT to gain UT residency, but are the merit scholarships for one year or two?

@HeadHunter500 it depends on the scholarship. Many are renewable for 8 semesters. You can see all of them here: https://financialaid.utah.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/freshman/index.php

When our daughter got her in-state residency is nullified her OOS scholarship, but for us, the in-state tuition makes up for it. She had a 4.0 UW GPA but her ACT score wasn’t high enough to be competitive for the really good scholarships.
