No. My son did not confirm. He received $5,500 in loans.
Same here. They said our financial aid was the federal $5500. We did not have to confirm anything, and said our “need” was closer to 15K or something, leaving a gap. Hoping for merit.
Is there anyone here that didn’t receive their financial aid? I’m now worried that they didn’t receive a required document. Thanks for your guys’ help!!
@Senior4531 - our son is OOS (EA admitted) and has not received financial aid in the portal. I too went into a little tailspin worrying about it but attempted to talk myself down with the following (a) FAFSA was part of app process so they have that, (b) they keep changing the date the aid will be announced so they are clearly dealing with internal challenges this pandemic-y year, and © this is the first test optional year so they have a new system to implement which really has to throw a monkey wrench into things. …or, you and our son are screwed because some curial piece is missing… trying to block that option out!! GL!!
I’d guess the issue is most likely that Financial Accounting has set up the portals to align with the original March 1 deadline but Financial Aid has not added the merit in yet because they are running behind schedule.
Accounting appears to add the unsubsidized $5500 loan option for anyone who submitted a FAFSA regardless of other scholarships - we had a portal showing merit plus loan of more than the estimated COA at one point. So I don’t think this is anything to worry about in terms of implications for merit aid decisions.
I would however be very upset with them if they didn’t give merit decisions before the March 10 Housing LLC deadline when you have to pay a non-refundable application fee. Anyone considering an LLC (which usually has the best housing options) who is relying on a favorable merit decision should probably make that point to admissions.
My daughter received the acceptance notification today (3/01), but there is no mention of financial package. With $12380 WUE tuition and $10201 room and board. The cost of attendance is comparable or even lower than California State Universities! We will wait and see.
This is exactly what I am worried about. We have a potential LLC picked out and are ready to deposit, but I worry that paying for that might affect which scholarship S is offered. No idea if they are organized enough to notice, but if a kid is depositing for housing before scholarship, why offer the bigger one?
I don’t know…maybe I’m losing it from this whole process because I have to admit that I sound crazy.
I don’t think anyone is that conspiratorial (and you can be pretty sure they’re not that coordinated, given what you’ve seen to date!). But it would suck to pay another non-refundable deposit for housing and then find out the aid is insufficient.
Son just got an email that says - WUE awards will be sent in mid-March. If you have a 3.0 unweighted GPA and above, you should expect to receive the WUE.
@loveorangecats - not cray at all. we had the same logic.
@Twoin18 - I think the challenge for some of us is that we have admitted kids that submitted the FAFSA but not even the unsubsidized $5500 (that shows up at every school) is not showing up. So we are doubly (unnecessarily I think) concerned that there has been some goof by us or UoU. That being said I am one of a MUTLITUDE of posters on here grateful for all your input - and appreciate your help in calming our nerves through this process!!
In the email my son received today, it lists this link for WUE Western Undergraduate Exchange - Financial Aid and Scholarships - The University of Utah. Check my math but think it is WUE is 150% of instate tuition ($9286+4643) or $13,929 plus $11,844 for housing for a total of $25,773. But as someone has pointed out up thread, WUE doesn’t stack with merit so if someone was to get merit it may be better to take that if your student plans to stay over summer and get residency. It is all confusing. I wish they would just tell us about merit/wue and give a total cost.
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one thinking, or overthinking, this way!
I don’t think WUE includes fees either. It is only the tuition that is discounted, I believe.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
that is correct and only 18 units
I get the WUE tuition from the wuesavingsfinder.wiche.edu/search-results.php url.
Fees don’t differ between instate and out of state. You don’t pay 150% of the fees, just the same as everyone else. But you do need to take into account that the tuition is paid by the credit (though you pay less per credit if you take more credits in a semester).
Utah quotes the COA for 12 or 13 credits (12 is the minimum full time courseload) here: Cost of Attendance - Financial Aid and Scholarships - The University of Utah
but in reality you will need an average of 15 to get to 120 total in four years. That is a cost of ~$9660/$30710 rather than $9286/$29996 at instate/OOS rates. Note also the additional fees for online courses, business students etc. are not included in any of this. Fees are likely to be anywhere from $500-$2000 per year more than the quoted base tuition and fees.
Ya I am attending the admitted students webinar right now and the question regarding merit scholarships is keep on popping up. The faculty says they do not have the exact date but they are trying to get them out asap.
We did not, but we had to send additional documentation almost 2 weeks ago. At worst, we will get the Stafford. Merit is what matters for us, finances can change. We are waiting on 7 colleges still, so this delay is no big deal.
I have a dorm question for the group. First, what’s the difference between a Living Learning Community and a themed community? Our son is most interested in Kahlert Village and would like to be on just a normal floor but we can’t figure out if that’s an option. He sent a note to the admissions counselor two weeks about but never got a response.
