@DadofMTgal I really liked Shaun’s review of Utah here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/17990554#Comment_17990554
It really helped us decide.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them here. I will answer what I can. There is also a current student or two on CC that would likely be better able to respond…Unless you are looking for a parent’s perspective. Or feel free to private message me if you prefer. I will add to my previous post that my D is getting ready to set off for a 6-week study abroad program sponsored by the Theater Department (not just MT) in London from 5/9-6/20. It is supposed to be extremely impactful and even won the U’s 2013 Beacon of Excellence Award for “creating transformational experiences that empower students.”
Thinking about going to U of U this year. Do the kids have a private voice coach all 4 years? And I also heard you have to audition to be in the senior showcase. I’ve heard its a great environment up there!
It is a great environment! My D is a sophomore (soon to be Junior). You do get a private voice teacher all 4 years. My D loves hers and feels she has improved a great deal. I am not 100% sure about the Senior “showcase.” I think all the Seniors get in but auditions are just to get your part. It has changed each year, but I think they are doing a seniors-only show this year. Last year may have been an original show. I have heard it is possible it may be more of a cabaret next year. But I don’t think they consider it so much as a showcase. They don’t take it to NYC and I am not sure if the purpose is to invite agents like it is in other schools. Again, not 100% so please ask the department to confirm. Also, feel free to post here or PM me with any other questions.
Im a soon to be junior as well. Let me be clear, it is NOT a senior showcase. It is a senior show that they do as a class where they take everything they have learned in the 2 years of “Studio” classes and put it all together into a production. No agents or professional personal are on hand as a regular “showcase”. Our program director is a firm believer in showcases being a complete waste of time, and I am a firm believer in that as well. Feel free to PM me or post here as well and I will be sure to get back to you with answers!! Go Utes!!
As of now: Officially done with college auditions! Ahhhh. I’m not sure how to feel… Relieved, regretful, happy, content or all of the above? Wow this was a crazy experience. A true example of how much control we do NOT have over several things in this experience.
Thank you for all the Utah information. That sounds wonderful
@stageman181 @shaun0203 Those of you at U of U, thank you for all the info on here, considering them as well. I just wanted to ask, at my audition, David mentioned that 5 people in the freshman class had dropped out first semester this year. Do you guys know why or what was going on? Thanks!
I can’t speak specifically about those kids who left, and I did hear from a parent who mentioned on the phone that David had mentioned that at one of the auditions. I can say people leave this and other programs for so many reasons…financial is probably the most common, they may find that studying MT is very different than they expected, they may want to broaden their studies, they may have problems transitioning to college in general, family issues, or in Utah they may decide to go on a mission. Or they may not like the program specifically. My D’s class lost a few the first year too, but all the current Sophomores who stayed seem to be committed.
Kids leaving the program is completely random and happens at every school just FYI. 2 kids switched to the Actors Training Program. One went on a mission. One had financial issues and will try to come back after that was figured out. One got homesick. The kids who switched to the ATP just thought it was a better fit (both are very good programs). So the program had absolutely nothing to do with kids leaving thank you very much.
And the kids from my class again were for financial issues, visa issues, and one went to the opera program
Thank you, I’m just trying to make sure I know everything I can to make my decision. I appreciate your information Thanks!
