University of Utah or Cal Poly Pomona?

heyI currently go to college of the canyons in california and live at home and im transferring soon as a finance major. But i need help deciding between university of utah and cal poly. I already got accepted into utah and im waiting on pomona but ill probably get it. tuition isn't really an issue because my dad lives in utah so i can get in state tuition over there. I just cant decide.
I know utah is probably a better school and all but i was born and raised in cali and i really really like living here and after visiting utah a couple weeks ago im not sure if its for me. I like city life. the hardest part is deciding whether i should stay here cuz i like it here or go to utah because its a better school.

oh and i do plan on going to a really good grad school so how much does undergrad matter?

Thanks

Isn’t University of Utah in Salt Lake City? The Salt Lake area is over 1 million people I know it’s not LA or SF but it is big. If you visited and don’t like the feel then go to Cal Poly.

Utah is going to be a radical change for you in terms of culture since it’s a conservative, cold, mountain state. I’d go to Cal Poly Pomona, save some money, then go for grad school to UCLA or Berkeley.

Salt Lake City is one of the least conservative cities in Utah, and the area around the U of U is the most liberal part of the city. the U of U culture is nothing like BYU in Provo.

Granted it’s the most liberal part of the state, if you want to major in finance (as OP wants); you might want to get closer to a large financial center such as Los Angeles rather than an isolated location. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, etc, etc, etc all have presence in LA and might provide opportunity for internships, co-ops and ultimately jobs. Just a though.

What’s your reference for stating that U of Utah is probably a better school? Really? How is Utah’s career placement record with financial/businesses in California?

I recently read an article in forbes about how utah is now the best place to do business and a lot of large companies like goldman and merrill are setting up shop in SLC. of course it could never compare to LA tho.

@lakewashington all the rankings from us news and princeton review have led me to believe that utah is better. but how much better could it be? I mean this is california…we rock!

Utah is one of those schools imo that 10 years from now if you say I graduated from University of Utah it will be like saying today I graduated from University of Michigan or University of Texas. Many California schools are taking a downward turn due to funding cuts.

[Stimulus boosts research funding at University of Utah and Utah State University | Deseret News](http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700053143/Stimulus-boosts-research-funding-at-University-of-Utah--and-Utah-State-University.html)

To be fair University of Utah did see a 9% cut last year in funding but that looks like the end of the cuts for them whereas Cal Poly Panoma will probably be seeing deep cuts for the next few years.

thats exactly what has me thinking about utah so much. I mean i would rather be here in cali but utah is a lot more promising. utah’s economy is way better than californias and if all else fail in utah the mormon church will fund the school because thats just what they do.
I agree with what you said about 10 yrs from now. and i think the same will not be true with california schools. i think maybe 10 years from now the effects of these budget cuts in cali are going to be more noticeable and a lot of schools are going to lose the reputation they have especially in the CSU system.

another thing i was thinking is Utah has a finance major and Pomona only has buss admin with a concentration in finance, real estate, and law. but i dont know how much this should matter because i can just get a masters in finance.

I doubt many of those top finance firms are doing much with CPP. USC, Claremonts and UCLA fill their needs along with some northern Cali schools. Due to all the money in the church (which they invest) there are many major finance firms in SLC.

Why go to an essentially commuter school in inland Los Angeles versus an up and coming major state university that just joined the Pac-12?

The college experiences are going to be very different.
