My daughter got merit even though she didn’t submit scores. My understanding is they weren’t considered for merit for most schools but i am not certain of uvm. She has a 95 GPA unweighted, took 4 AP classes and decent ECs.

After being accepted EA my child has been trying to keep up with UVM by checking their social media handles. Has anyone else noticed how the most innocuous posts will be spammed immediately with insulting comments against the university, students, and the administration? I don’t see how this helps. The comments seem so whiny, childish and border on cyberbullying. We have never been on campus so it is hard to tell if this is really what the students are like. This is a huge turnoff to the school but we are still planning to visit in the Spring.

Many of these comments are related to an issue that you can read more about here:

Some are choosing the university’s social media comments sections to voice their feelings and concerns.

My son is a sophomore transfer and is very happy at UVM. If you are able to visit you absolutely should. Burlington is a wonderful little city and the campus is vibrant and pretty. Congrats to your son and free to pm me if you have any questions.

My older son just graduated from there. I can tell you that this is NOT the general attitude and there is a lot of school spirit. Unfortunately a few people were upset about how the University handled some sexual assault cases a while back and continually spam the Facebook page with comments about it.

Totally agree that it’s not a pervasive vibe and that there are lots of happy students loving their experience both at the university and in Burlington in general. I don’t claim to know anything about the treatment of those who have reported SA on campus, and if things were not handled properly, I certainly hope the university is being responsive. My son couldn’t be happier with his choice to transfer to UVM (from UMass).

The more I read about UVM and see the comments by the students on social media, the more I am turned off. I have tried to keep an open mind and be supportive of my child’s interest. Still committed to touring in April. The constant spamming from what I assume is a small active segment of students is exhausting. Is there nothing else to do in Burlington? If those students are so unhappy and fearful, shouldn’t they transfer? So, either the admin really is ineffecitve or UVM has managed to recruit the loudest, most pessimistic posse of internet trolls possible to its student body. Either way, not good. (We have joined the FB parents group.)

I feel the exact same way. My D23 has it on her list to explore but every time I go to their social media, I mentally cross it off the list. This, combined with the negative posts on here regarding housing problems, feels like too many red flags.

Has anyone attended an in person admitted students day yet? I’m planning on April and just curious how long the day will last. Thank you!

Not yet. Also attending in April. Looking forward to it. One step closer to a decision.

@SkiMom2022 My daughter went to an admitted student day back at the end of February (in a snow storm!). It was very organized, informative and welcoming. She really enjoyed it.

The Admitted Student day really sealed the deal for my older son in 2018. It was the best run Admitted Student day of the three he attended and he picked a new major based on a presentation he attended there. My younger son has been accepted but I am not sure if we will go to one of these days or not since we are already pretty familiar with the school and he is still waiting for decisions from several other schools.

UVM is my DDs first choice but I’m just curious, any idea how they know if it’s one of your safety schools?

Sometimes schools may assume you’re looking for a safety or merit money when your GPA/test scores/rigor are well above their published average stats. I don’t think they ever know for sure, but applying Early Action and doing the optional essay will help. My daughter applied to UVM, and it was a safety for her, but she did both of those things (the essay and apply early) and she was accepted with 18k in merit.

Your child’s school probably uses Naviance which will determine if is a match, reach or safety. It’s based on test scores and grades and how you compare to the median. That being said, it really all went out the window last year as admission everywhere was much harder and my son only got into his safeties and one low match! He did get into UVM and seriously considered it but in the end chose a different school.

The difficult thing about Naviance is the predictor still pairs gpa and test scores, which makes it impossible for Naviance to predict if she isn’t submitting test scores. Based on GPA alone she should be a match, but there are probably a thousand other kids who are too. We’ll see.
