I'm currently a Cal Poly -SLO student and am thinking of transferring. While I did fairly well in high school (3.8ish, 1450) and got a 4.0 in Calculus, Chemistry, and bio at Cal Poly I am strongly considering UVM as I really would like to transfer to the northeast. I don't know why but the school appeals to me. My parents, however, want me to go to a more name-recognized school such as Boston College or Amherst (though I doubt my chances at one or both of these schools). Is university of Vermont a good school for a bio major like me hoping to go pre-med? Or should I be setting my sights "higher"?

Hey, if you want to go to U Vermont, then go to U Vermont! I don't know a ton about the school, other than it's supposed to have a nice campus. Having a 4.0 at CPSLO could get you into a better "name-brand" school, like Boston College as you mentioned, or schools like NYU, etc. Good luck w/ your decision!

True, and many people develop such an infatuation with UVM, but I'd say take a visit. It looks beautiful and everything everyone ever dreams, similar to the effect that Harvard might deliver. But I'd say visit, it was once my roommates first choice, until we drove up there and found that it was not all he expected from the guidebooks. So I'd say before you make such a drastic change of location, visit!

But do not let your parents be the deciding factor.

Yeah, basically my only requirement for my new college is location in the northeast (specifically, massachusetts, ny, vermont, new hampshire, connecticut). I go to New Hampshire every summer in a very rural location somewhat near Nashua. If it is anything like that then I will love it. I am also in love with Boston. Basically, I do not know where I want to go, but one thing is for sure - California and being close to home is not the way for me. I am a really independent person and know I can handle the challenge.

If you like it, I would say go for it because it is ranked #9 for med schools, which might mean that they have a good pre-med/bio program. Carolyn also recommended this school to me when I was looking for school's would a good pre-med program.

its a bit expensive from the LA area, but definitely visit before enrolling! I was in Vermont on vacation and visited the campus. It was pretty, but one surprising thing was this infernal noise from the roofs where they have very loud generators or something running. Wasn't the quiet tranquil place I expected!

Reading thru your post I get the feeling you haven't done a thorough search (eg. "my only requirement for my new college is location in the northeast") While UVM may very well turn out the be the school you're looking for, you need to do the work to figure that out. You should make a list of what you're looking for in a college including class size, degree of attention from profs, availability of counselors, if you get an advisor, where students live, activities they do outside of class, and so on. You've got a start because you've settled on geography, but all schools in the Northeast are not identical! Then get a guide book such as Petersons that lists hundreds of colleges and use your criteria to pick out likely candidates. A comprehensive and considered search will likely turn up colleges you may not have considered yet, and maybe ones that are an even better fit for you.

As an out-of-state student you'll be paying $34K to go to UVM, and that doesn't include getting there. For that money there are a number of other options you should at least consider.

Do you have anything against a California public? I can't imagine going to an OOS public if you're a California resident...what sense does that make?

I don't have anything against California publics; they are great schools - just not for me. And, as tacky as this obviously sounds, money is not a huge issue for me. I can likely get some scholarships and financial aid (fairly generous offers when I applied out of high school) and then the rest is paid for by a trust. I am very lucky. Basically, I have visited Amherst and Boston College and they are far and away my number ones, but I am strongly considering UVM as it is much more of a match for me (I think).
