University of Virginia Class of 2021 EA Discussion Thread

Daughter just received an email about Days on the Lawn today and we already registered. Can’t wait to go back and visit Charlottesville in March!

woah- my student just got emails about Echols and College Science Scholars! We have not received any USPS mail yet at all, so it was a complete shock. (I mentioned we live in a very remote location, right?) Maybe we will get the letters tomorrow. I am going to really try to get over there for the DOTL in April. Just a heads up to have your child check email even if you haven’t heard anything by post yet!

My S also just got invitations to both Echols and College Science Scholars! @Dean J, can a student be both an Echols and College Science Scholar, or must he choose one or the other?

@noviax Do you know if you are allowed to participate in both Echols and College Science Scholars or do you have to choose one? The CSS was a complete surprise, so we are not sure how it works. Thanks for any info you have heard about it.

Has anyone else gotten emails today mentioning Echols or CSS? I know it is likely the USPS letters are just late in coming (or on-time for our location) but because I am paranoid, I am now worrying these emails were in error…

@sursumcorda I am also curious whether we can participate in both. However, I checked the official emails that UVA sent, and the DOTL for CSS ends at 10:30, which is when the Echols DOTL starts. Based on this, I believe that this schedule allows students like us to attend both DOTLs. Based on these assumptions, it seems like we are allowed to participate in both programs.

Dean J posted on the blog that you can be in both. (At least that is how I understood her response in the comments section of the blog.) Hope that helps!

Does UVa offer any financial support for flights/lodging for DOTL?

@“Dean J” So if we’re in-state and haven’t received an Echols letter by say, tomorrow, is it fair to say we haven’t gotten in? Also, does UVa send out an official “fat envelope” to students admitted through Early Action?

So excited for DOTL!

My S just received his acceptance packet, Echols letter and CSS letter in the mail. We’re in NY.

@xcgal17 The admissions envelope with EA admission notification that S received (yesterday in TX) was the size of a regular mailer – about 6X9 and could easily be missed with all of your other mail. It is an orange envelope with white geometric shapes on it.

Are the Echols letters always included in the orange envelopes with the admissions letters, or do they arrive separately? I received the admissions letter yesterday, but nothing about Echols. Should I give up hope?

The Echols letter arrived in a separate envelope.

The Echols and College Science Scholar letters arrived under separate cover. There were also emails that went out inviting Echols and CSS students to attend their special information sessions at DOTL.

Is registering for DOTL urgent? My parents and I keep going back and forth about which date to attend. I’m worried they will all fill up fast.

^ The ones around Easter are likely to fill out the fastest as they are during school holidays and they will include kids who are admitted RD. The ones in March are less likely to fill up quickly and are less likely to overlap with other school’s admitted students’ days. What are the other criteria that are making it hard to decide?

Could someone PM me the facebook group for UVA admits 2021? Cheers!

Thanks @londondad ! we weren’t sure whether I should go to DOTL before I hear back from other schools or not. By April, I’ll have heard back from all of the schools that I applied to, and there might be some more trips to fit in that month. I’ll also be traveling for one of the dates in March. My spring break is early.

Also, you should book your hotel asap. There are not very many hotels near campus and some of them are pretty grotty. However, even the grotty ones jack up their prices when UVA or the CFA Institute have something going on that week. The Omni is a great choice if you can get a good rate.

I’m just seeing all these @Dean J posts.

During reading season, I try to check in here, but there are always stretches when it isn’t possible. So, this isn’t the place to get in touch with me or anyone in my office. It’s always going to be fastest to just call our office (434 982-3200) to get immediate answers to your questions.

If you need to get to me directly, you can send me a tweet or email.

Do you guys believe that all the Echols Scholar acceptance letters have been received? I’m an in-state student and am really hoping that there is still a chance for me to get the letter.
